Well, at CS, it's the ones who pay the largest fees to Raps who get to be mods. There's really no rhyme nor reason to who gets picked. It's really quite random.
We mods just start throwing darts at a members list and see what sticks and then we invite the winners to our little clique.
    (Just kidding. )
    Point to Ponder:

Is it considered irony when someone on an internet forum makes a post that can be considered to look like it was written by a 3rd grade dropout, and they are poking fun of the fact that another person couldn't spell?

I'm one of the bubble heads who actually can't figure out how to multi quote.

Damn - where's that ASHAMED, bag-over-the-head icon when you need it?

White button by quote on each post, with the quotation and plus sign. Click by each post, then when you've selected them all, click reply, they'll be in the reply message box, just as if you'd clicked quote on one.
Any comment I make should not be taken as an absolute, unless I say it should be. Even this one.

Well, that's not too surprising. About what I expected.

Just a question to Raps and Ree... do you get bombarded with people begging to become mods? At one board where I admin, not a week goes by without some newbie PMing me asking to become a mod. -.- It's aggravating, cuz the people chosen for modship have always been around for a while, have a clean record and are generally helpful... and the people who ask are either newbies, total noobs, troublemakers or really young. Or all four. -.-
"Oh wow, I can't believe how stupid I used to be and you still are."

It also quotes them in the order you click the icon, as I discovered earlier today.

Actually, I very rarely get that sort of request. I'd also never honour it. If someone wants extra work, be suspicious of their motives.

The system we work is fairly simple. When we think we need more people - due to inactivity or increased numbers on the board - we have a think about people we consider to have the right sort of attitude. We have a discussion and come down to a shortlist, and then break it down further. Some of the names we've discussed at times would probably surprise you.

After that, I pm people to let them know of the offer. Nobody has refused to date, but that time may come. We give people a week or two on invisimod status - no badge next to their name - and in that time they can leave with no issues either way. After that, it's announcement time.

I for one am quite glad that flame wars and free-for-all bashings are not allowed on these two sites.

The last forum that I frequented....it was for people in the serving profession, aka, waiting tables. I'm sure some of you probably know exactly what site I'm talking about.

Anyway, no, we didn't have a Fratching site....we had heated debates on whatever have you on the main pages.......and that was fine and dandy until people started having way different opinions and people started flaming one another and the mods and admin must have found it entertaining or even amusing...because they even joined in on the flaming. Constantly, one or two or three members would be mashed and bashed by other members and mods alike, and there was no report button, and PMing didn't do any good. They didn't care.....and it truly worked out as to if they didn't like you, you were a free target. I saw lots of people who had amazing stories and rants leave because they were tired of being bashed.

Sure, the free for all flaming was fun when it involved trolls....because then ALL the members would gang up on the random idiot trying to spew venom about servers being lazy slaves and not deserving of tips, but when it crossed the line into members attacking members....it was ugly.

I quit going there 4 summers ago, right before I found CS.com
