  • Irresponsible Fuckheads Who Abandon Animals

I got to tell ya'll how much of a horrible shitstorm my weekend was.

So we had this horrible storm on Wednesday night. My backyard looks like Hurricane Katrina went through it.

So after a horrible, harrowing journey home in the thick of it, driving my car through, no lie, WHITE FREAKING WATER to get home, wondering if I'm going to be swept to my death and drown in my car, I make it home. I'm stripping off my sodden clothes when I hear little animal noises out inside my window.

Yeah. Three newborn kittens. Feral mama cat sort of soaked and too weak to hardly move, babies in the mud, cold, soaked, half drowned. Now, I don't want any cats, okay? But I can't just leave them there, so I rescue them all. Put them in the laundry room (outside) in a basket, with a warming pad, feed mamma, etc.

I don't know what I"m gonna do with these damn cats, but I can hardly put them out. The babies actually survive the night.

Fast forward to Saturday morning. When she bit me.

So now I got a fucking situation on my hands. This is a freaking feral cat, and we got us some rabies down here. And I should have known better. But what the fuck was I supposed to do? So I call the number of the shelter, where they come get the cats and observe them to make sure I don't, you know, have frigging RABIES now. And they're all like "oh, we'll put the babies in with the mama, don't worry."

But you know what? That's HORSESHIT. No they fucking don't. They gas them right off the bat. And maybe I would have done things differently had I known that, I don't know. I just don't. But you know what? The last thing I needed on top of every other damn thing was a baldfaced lie thrown on top of it all.

So yeah. There you go. My weekend. Nice. Hope I'm not, you know, DYING.

It was my birthday, too. Happy fucking birthday.

So I guess it should come as no big shock I had a nice hangover this morning.

Wait, what? They told you they were going to keep them all alive, then euthanized them instead? That's cruel...but I dislike animal shelters in general. I won't threadjack, but my brother and sister in law had a horrible experience with their local shelter, too. Not quite as bad as yours, but still horrible.

You did what you thought was the right and best thing, which is the best you can do. It's horrible how some people treat animals, it really breaks my heart. *offers hugs* All I can say is, don't beat yourself up over it, like I said, you did the right thing and at least you tried, which is more than what the shelter can say.

PS: Happy Birthday! I'm sorry it was not your best.

Yeah, that's exactly what happened. Oh, they sugarcoated it a bit. They said "We'll put the babies in with the mom, but babies don't do well here."

      Indeed they don't.

The guy who picked up the cats slipped up and spilled the beans. Later I called the chick back up who initially told me that and kind of double talked her till she got flustered and messed up.

I understand it's a huge problem. And overwhelming problem. Nobody is gonna miss three little kittens in the grand scheme of things. That place is inundated with cats the way my backyard was swept away with muddy water. Kittens are simply adding to the problem. But that's not how it feels. You rescue something, you're emotionally invested, no matter what the logical part of your brain tells you.

I didn't like how it all played out. It made me feel kind of violated, to tell the truth. And the worries about the bite didn't help. Just made me feel sick inside all weekend. I'm still upset about it. I just feel like I should have done it all differently, and that has nothing to do with the logical part of my brain, either.

Get this, I took my kid to a birthday party Sunday, and Birthday Girl's grandma was hosting it. She lived way out on a dirt road, surrounded by miles of peach orchards and milk cow farms. She said she'd trapped no fewer than 18 cats off her porch in the last 6 months. 18 stray, unneutered cats. She said she was coming home one day and there was a cardboard box in the middle of the road. She got out to move the box and there were 8 kittens inside it.

That right there takes some serious, premediated evil douchery. I mean, think about it, some one goes "I'll just put the results of my stupidity and irresponsiblily out here where someone will HAVE to deal with it, and then it will be THEIR problem! What a great idea!"

I cannot imagine what kind of self-entered, brain-dead, dangerously careless CRETIN one would have to be to pull a stunt like that.

Years ago, someone did that with puppies out where I used to live, and they got out, some of them causing a series of car accidents along that road, and some of the dogs freezing to death in one of the rare snows we get down here. Just caused about a mile-wide zone of MESS for everyone. Not to mention, what did those little creatures do to deserve that?

      People make me sick.

But anyways, thanks for the nice birthday wish. My husband took me out and cheered me up Sunday.

The dog we have now was dumped on us. Luckily, I found him first, and Mom and I were able to make with the Bambi eyes and Dad let us keep him. Of course, now, they love him to pieces and he's probably the best dog we ever had. But when they dumped him...he wasn't even 6 weeks old yet and was wormy. (Although...he was so roly-poly that it was almost funny)

When my grandmother still had her farm...some asshole dropped off an entire box of kittens. Not just the kittens, but the mother cat too. Keep in mind that it was *very* cold that night...and had I not left some things in the car...they'd probably have frozen to death Rather than let that happen, I put my grandmother's car outside, and put the kitties in the garage. They spent the entire weekend in there, until I could get someone to take them to the shelter. Too bad, but we already had one cat, who wasn't exactly nice to other cats. With that said, I wasn't about to take in 6 or 7 more!

I really wish animal abusers got punished far far more seriously than they do here in the states.

Flyndaran, they are one of the few groups I can think of that I would wish that they got exactly what they deserved.

I really wish animal abuse laws applied to more than a select group of animals.

But we may all disagree on what they deserve.

How so? I don't think people should be punished for swatting a fly. Though I do think boiling animals alive is really screwed up. (lobsters etc.)

RecoveringKinkoid - Since the Mama cat bit you she would have to be destroyed anyway to be tested for rabies. If she had rabies the kittens would have gotten it from her too. They should have told you in the beginning especially if there is a high amount of rabies in your area. Its a rotten deal all around as far as I'm concerned.

I see that problem here a lot too. I have 4 cats and 1 kitten stray/feral cats around my house that I do not own. I feed them and when I can I try to get them spayed/neutered too. The neatest thing is I got the one male neutered and he is the sweetest thing. He will always try to greet me everyday when I'm around. He would have made a very good pet.

It got really bad when all of the layoffs happened last year. The numbers have gone down but it was due to coyotes, cougars, dogs, and starvation. I have also rescued 3 kittens. One was lucky enough that I was going to the Vet for my two cats that day and he was sick. He was adopted 4 weeks later though the same non-profit group I got my cats out of. The other two I tried to find a home for them after I got them altered but I couldn't so I gave them to a Human society. They found homes within a month.

When I was in 5th grade two 3 month old puppies found our house. Both had birth defects involving there legs but they were good dogs. They ended being my best friends throughout middle and high school. I even got them to bite and nip my brother and my mom got them to do the same thing with my dad.

That hasn't been true for decades. They can do blood work on a living animal. Also, I don't think she said bit like the cat was completely insane with rabies, so I doubt the cat had it.

then explain that recent (last year, or something) story about the girl who was bit at a zoo after going past the barricades, and since the mom refused to get the kid shots, they had to kill the (I wanna say meerkats, but I'm not sure) animals in order to test. There was a huge uproar by people who thought the mother was a right bitch for refusing to get her kid shots, and forcing the destruction of the animals instead.
Any comment I make should not be taken as an absolute, unless I say it should be. Even this one.

I thought animals were regularly killed afte any attack on a human regardless of the specifics.
That case was just stupid all around. I wouldn't take the idiots in charge's word for anything.

Rabies is not detected in blood work. It can only be confirmed by testing brain tissue. So yes, they still euthanize animals for rabies testing.
