I always found it hiliarious that the anime, Outlaw Star, took place 150 years after the invention of lightspeed travel.. and the main character, Gene Starwind, can be seen in one episode using a camcorder with a video cassette. What I want to know is... if they can make inter-galactic starships with heavy lasers on them, why they still use P40's??? Why haven't they adapted a staff weapon? After all, the 'only' reason they use them was accuracy (which was amusing in that episode ).
(and yes, I do pick the lack of reality on such shows!)ZOE: Preacher, don't the Bible got some pretty specific things to say about killing?
SHEPHERD BOOK: Quite specific. It is, however, Somewhat fuzzier on the subject of kneecaps.

My best friend (who I am not dating) calls me geek because of the many times we've gone into Best Buy and I don't notice whatever girl who is scantly clad walking by because I'm looking at a laptop that has my interest.
My girlfriend (who is my best friend that I'm dating) calls me geek because instead of watching porn or looking at it, I'd much rather read Wired magazine.
I'm a geek in class because I love technology like the rest of them and I know computers.
I'm a geek with some of my other friends because well, I'm awkward at times.
My parents call me geek because ever since I was a young kid I like to take things apart, figure out how they work and put them back together.
But overall, I'm me. I love technology because I understand it and things with buttons amuse me. I'd much rather read Wired magazine or look at laptops vs looking at porn or checking out women because I'm very much in love with my girlfriend and no other woman even piques my interest. I'm socially awkward at times because I can become very shy very fast. I've always liked to tinker with things, I like using my hands. I like knowing how things work.
But really, the end result is that I'm me. I don't like Sci-Fi. Star Wars never got my attention. Computer games bore me, I'm all about my PS3. I love sports almost to a fault.Crooked banks around the world would gladly give a loan today so if you ever miss a payment they can take your home away.

In Stargate they actually do use the alien technology they find. Any weapos they do find would be taken to a research facility and rarely used in the field unless absolutely required. Teal'c keeps his staff weapon because it is his personal property.
Sorry bit of a Stargate Fanatic.

Well, you get me on the Fanatic examples only by the last 3 on the list.
And my query was why they don't adapt the staff weapon.. not use it. Yes, I agree with all of the deficiencies of the staff weapon, but I could imagine they can modify it to something smaller, more accurate and just as reliable (without the apparent issues of ammunition.. but who's to say??)

As far as I can see, humanities ship-building and alien tech-using abilities are extremely limited. The one ship I definitely remember that they themselves built was an incredibly feat of work requiring incredible resources. More or less a one-off thing.
Meanwhile, conventional weapons seem to be more than effective enough at the man-portable level, easily maintainable, acquirable and with more than enough manufacturing capability to keep supplied. Why build a fancy laser weapon to down skimmers when an AT4 works just as well? cheap, too. all things considered.
I don't seem to remember too many occasions where it was definitively shown that they couldn't do what they needed to with their P90s. It also strikes me as odd that the staff laser things have no visible or explained sighting system, basically rendering them hopelessly inaccurate at medium to long range.
One person told me that the skiff canon Tilk picks up in at one point is obviously superior. Except that for the same if not smaller size and most certainly less weight, he could've just lugged a Mk 19 and inflicted the same if not more damage (it's a fully-automatic, belt-fed grenade launcher...).
On a related note, P90s are an exceptionally good choice as the most prevalent problem they could be faced with (armor penetration) is exactly what the p90 and it's rounds were designed to defeat. Why they didn't take the Five-Seven as a sidearm (same cartridge), is most likely because they didn't put that kind of thought into the choice
On topic for a moment:
Isn't this really a standard stereotype problem?
That someone is geeky doesn't necessarily make them the same as other geeks any more than being athletic mean one is the same as all other athletic people.
Also, labels are a vital part of identity and communication. I'm a guy who likes things indicates nothing about you and serves no purpose. 'I'm a bit of a geek' identifies that you are, at least partially, part of that social group. You're trying to sum up your interest in one statement, since no one want to hear 4 paragraphs about what movies you like and dislike when asking about your character. All units: IRENE
