  • But I'm not one of those "Asiaphiles"!

This website isn't exactly new. It's been around for a while

    http://www.asianwhite.org/afwm/why.html

I don't know about anyone else, but I'm a bit skeptical of this guy and his motivations. He's a white man who dates Asian women exclusively and the purpose of his website (or most of it anyway) seems to exist purely to justify his preference for Asian women.

White male/Asian female interracial couples do seem to be more common than the reverse. While lots of guys in these relationships are perfectly well adjusted, the fact is that a lot of them also prefer Asian women because of popular stereotypes about them. And this guy is trying to convince people that he's not one of them. But to me, the very fact that he feels a need to set up a website devoted to explaining his preference suggests that he is.

At a glance his arguments seem reasonable at first. But if you think about them more carefully, they should make anyone suspicious.

    He says:

I have found that people are very skeptical of my love for the Asian people and the culture they have created. Because I date Asians they assume that any attempt to understand or appreciate Asian culture is strictly an attempt to impress Asian women. I have always admired the art, philosophy, and traditions of Asia. China and Japan have always held a certain appeal for me. Being a movie buff, I regularly watch movies made in Asia or movies about Asians. The politics of the region fascinate me; I have spent countless hours discussing the Chinese freedom movement with friends.
OK two things he said really stand out to me. One is that he goes on about his love for "Asian" culture as if it were on big homogenous entity. There is no such thing as "Asian" culture. The culture of countries like China, Japan, Korea and Vietnam all have histories and traditions quite different from one another and just shows how superficial he is.

Also he says his friends are very skeptical of his love for "Asian" culture. I'm sure it would be interesting to hear his friends side of this argument as to why they're suspicious.

And then on their attraction to him he says:

When an Asian woman looks at me with attraction it fills me with a great sense of being a handsome man.
Really. How much more pompous can you get than that.

My attraction to Asian women has nothing to do with White Women, and everything to do with Asian Women.
Sure dude. You just keep telling yourself that.

Maybe I'm wrong about this guy I don't know. But if I'm not, the sad thing is that guys like him aren't rare.

    Wow.

He's taken down the website already. That was fast!

Ah, well. Still could provide fodder for discussion.

You are right on the money with that "Asian culture" thing. I didn't get a chance to look at the site, but anyone who thinks there's such a thing as "Asian" culture is revealing their ignorance.

Chinese and Japanese cultures alone are as different as America and France; but hey, the Chinese and Japanese sorta look alike, right? Just like Americans and the French? So they're the same thing, I think.

One major difference there, America and France never went to war. Pretty sure Chinese people who know their history would resent the hell out of being mistaken for Japanese, after Japan invaded and occupied Manchuria during ww2

Unless you count the French-Indian War, although I guess we were technically British at the time.

A friend of mine is a Japanese cultural historian and the only thing that makes her crazier than Japan-crazy weaboos are people who think all of Asia is the same.

Ugh. I have been trying to break my wife of that habit. The thing is, she only says "Kawaiiiiiiiiiii" because she knows it makes me squirm.

I, too, am annoyed by the "Kawaii" people. I do like some things from Japanese culture - not really an anime/manga fan - but one can go too far. The derogatory term for white people acting Japanese/bdeing obsessed with Japanese is "weaboo" or "wapanese". I don't use these, but I find these people annoying.

No faults with really being fascinated with, and getting into, other cultures. Great way to open up. But trying to pretend you're part of one is taking things a bit far, in my opinion.

                    That doesn't surprise me.

Around here, the big thing is white girls obsessed with black men, and black men obsessed with white girls.

But it's not like we need a website to broadcast it.

                      Not to mention Nanking.

I always hate people, usually kids, online who are total anime snobs and think that they know everything about Japanese culture... when all they know could be written on a postage stamp.

Postage stamp? I think you give a bit too much credit.

                            Good gravy!

I don't think that thing would be worth enough postage to mail something to my living room!

                              Weeeellllllllllllll.......................

If there is 'Western culture', then why not 'Asian culture'? And 'African culture', and 'Pacific culture'?? They all do have certain similarities (not surprisingly, historically speaking). And although China and Japan are quite different, their differences are somewhat less than the differences between 'generic Asian' culture, and Europe/North American (aka Western) culture.

FTR, some of my students (17 years old) still have a hatred towards the Japanese!

(also FTR - of course I know Asia is not all the same... they cook different foods! )
