Or punish the student who defended themselves, and let the bully get away scot free. In third year, I finally cracked after three years of constant bullying and beat the shit out of a girl who scratched my face. I got a week's suspension; she got away scot free. Just how can anyone think that's fair? Punish neither or punish both.

On the flip side, if you don't have tenure you can be laid off for anything. I'm not sure about other states but in MA you get tenure after three years and a day at the same school and for those first three years you pretty much have to watch your ass. That's not necesarrily a bad thing but if you happen to have a crazy department head who just doesn't like that you make poetry interactive rather than stuffy...
New York City now spends an extraordinary $11,000 per student. That's $220,000 for a classroom of twenty kids. Couldn't you hire two or three excellent teachers and do a better job with $220,000?

Now before you say “oh but we can fire an incompetent teacher, right? After all there are procedures that the unions have to enable the system to do that.” Here’s what you have to do in NY to fire a teacher. Yes it’s a simplified flow chart, but it gives you an idea of how to do it. Average is 3 years to get through this process. Looks fun, doesn’t it?

Nobody can open up a students head and cram the knowledge in, so why blame a school for the slackers? Shouldn't the slackers get the blame for what they do?
I’m all for failing the slackers. It does them a disservice to just let them slid through life thinking “I don’t even have to do the minimum, they’ll just pass me anyway.” Real life does not work that way. It should not take 66 steps to get ride of a disruptive student either. If it results in a lawsuit, then go to court. Seems as if schools have no problems with going to court against students rights to free speech, rights to not be searched. Let them go to court about the right to fail a student.

Oh the stories I could tell of both my husband and mine own experiences with bullies. Especially my husband. See I could deal with girls methods of bullying - psychological warfare. Boys seem to be violent. Put an 8 year old boy bully against a 4 year old with some temper issues and watch as the kid eventually snaps. He tried to chock to death someone twice his age and 3 times his weight because he simply couldn’t take it any longer. Took 4 teachers to get him off. Don’t worry about me, he learned years ago to deal with his anger and is a much much calmer person now.

Personally I’m for punishing just the bully. They finally caused their victim to lash out at them, they get what they deserve. The bullies victim shouldn’t be punished further.

NCLB was an absolute travesty. What the hell can kids benefit from only learning to fill their scan-tron sheets the neatest? Abso-freaking-lutely NOTHING! It's unfortunate teachers these days get so much grief for any little thing. When really half the time it's the fuckwit "Parents of the Year" that dump their pwecious snowflake on the teacher like they're supposed to be free babysitters and substitutions for their parental duties. Your widdle pwecious is failing in school because they are slacking off and you're not helping out one bit, you sorry excuses for parents! Or how about you have the helicopter parents that do everything for the kids and bitch to the teacher that their kid failed. YOUR kid's in school, NOT you and stop doing your kids work for them, they won't get by very far in the real world!!!
There are no stupid questions, just stupid people...
