  • Morning Bad Moods

Many days during the last couple of weeks, I have been in the absolute worst mood in the morning when I'm getting up and getting ready for work. While I'm getting ready and making sure I have all my stuff ready and with me, I have this unbearable sense of irritability where I feel like could easily lash out at anyone for almost anything. However, these horrible moods never last long. Once I get to work, I feel fine, calm and affable again.

It bothers me because I hate feeling this way. There are some people out there who absolutely love getting mad and working themselves into a nice funk over something. I'm not one of those people. When I get in these moods, I start to feel strained, and I sometimes even feel a little sick.

Sounds exactly like PMS...although we can safely assume it's not in your case.

Where do you live? I've found a lot of people in northern areas have felt cranky in the early mornings, since they have to get up before the sun every morning. The time around the winter solstice is difficult, because we don't get enough sunlight.

If that's all it is, then you'll start feeling better in a month or so. In the meantime, take vitamin D supplements. You get vitamin D from the sun, and your body needs it to deal with stress.

When I first get up, it's still dark, but by the time I get out of the shower and get dressed, it's usually at least a little light outside. Though the sunlight/Vitamin D thing might have a little bit to do with it.

I've heard that theory before Boozy. I agree with it. There's nothing like no sunlight when I wake up to get a "F-this" coming from me in the morning.

Could it be dread of going to work? You state you get in a better mood once you get there, so that's likely not the case, but it's a thought to consider.

When I worked at my old job, I hated it so much that I sometimes had a horrible feeling of dread in the mornings before going in, especially on days where I knew a particular manager was in charge. Once I actually got there, however - my mood usually improved, even if the day ultimately sucked - because (for me at least) the anticipation and dread was worse than the actual events of the day.

          Just my 3 cents.

Regardless of the reason, I hope you get to the bottom of it soon and that things look up for you. And thanks to Boozy, I think I'll pick up some vitamin D tomorrow to see if that helps.

It's called Seasonal Affective Disorder, and it's much more common than you think. Basically, most people don't feel awake unless the sun is rising or has risen. With much shorter days in the winter (particularly in northern climates), it becomes much more noticeable. Remember, in those same areas (of which I live in) the days during summer are incredibly long with daylight, so it's easier to notice the change.

I don't think anyone up here is ever unaffected, though it does affect different people in different ways.

It might be the Seasonal Affective Disorder. The question is when do you go to work. Do you wake up before the sun? By the time you get to work is the sun up?

Or is there someone or something that you hate to deal with in the morning? The anticipation of dealing with a troublemaker or someone not doing there job correctly before I get in can make me cranky too.

I really don't think so, because I just started this job a few weeks ago, and it's a job I really like. It pertains directly to the master's degree I just earned last August, and it's the precise job I had in mind while earning the degree. I even posted about it on CS.

I hate to say this, but the more I think about it, I think this morning mood thing is a hangover from when I still lived at home. I tend to be the kind of person who doesn't care for conversation first thing in the morning. However, back then, I usually couldn't have the peace and quiet in the morning that I usually want. Maybe I'm subconsciously remembering how I used to feel back then.

Until you said you liked your job, I just assumed that things had gotten so bad that you just lost your will to start a new day every day.

Some people are just naturally crankier in the morning or whenever they first get up.
