  • "in my day..."

    "we didn't have internet!"

    "we played board games!"

    "we only had 4 channels!"

    "We used the payphone!"

Well, it's not YOUR day anymore, it's OUR day, and we have all this wonderful technology available to us. I've had many people, from uncles, aunts, friends parents, and even my own parents spout this crap about how they didn't have the technology we have now and they got by just fine. Well newsflash, we have better technology now and just because you did fine without it, doesn't mean we should all hold ourselves back.

It's so condesending to hear this crap! Why shouldn't I want to take advantage of the technology we have now? When you have something as great and versital as the internet, why shouldn't I use it? Why settle for something less?

If they want to do things the old fasion, be my guest, but don't look down on people for evolving and trying new things.

OH my god yes. There is also the variation of people griping that since they grew up doing things one way that is the way everyone should do it.

For example complaining that paying with me over the phone costs money when it is free for people that choose to use the internet.

It should be free for them to call me in their minds and cost money for the people wishing to use the internet as we should be encouraging everyone to use the ways they grew up with.

The only problem with this view is that there are people who are total EWs who think that just cuz they can get stuff instantly online, they should get it in real life too. Also, this era with all its wonderful technology has spawned the following irritants:

      1. Mr "I Want Everything Now!"

      2. Ms "My Mobile Is Clamped Permanently To My Ear!"

      3. Mr "He Who Dies With The Most Toys Wins!"

      4. Mrs "My TV Raises My Kids!"

Sure, every era has its naysayers, but lump all those who are being nostalgic for a time where we weren't all rushing around, getting billions of virtual friends and bursting a blood vessel just cuz we're forced to do without a phone/computer etc into the same group as moaners is a bit unfair. This era is far from perfect.

Having said that, anyone who says, "In my day, I walked to school in twenty feet of snow" can take a hike.
"Oh wow, I can't believe how stupid I used to be and you still are."

I've said that before, but it's usually after some inane comment about how it's impossible for them to survive 5 minutes without their iPod, iPhone and internet access.

I hate to break it to you, but that mentality has been around for generations.

I'm just glad enough I can not only remember "those" days I'm still able to adapt and take full advantage of today's technology.

Not in this form, actually; I was referring to the people who feel that in order that they be fufilled, they have to lug around an ipod, mobile, laptop, digital camera, iplayer and tons of other junk. I wasn't referring to the mentality. -.-

I will occasionally do that with my students who can't go without their cell phones for 50 minutes for lecture or 2 1/2 hours for a play. The need to come up with a witty Facebook status trumps being respectful enough to pay attention to class. I personally feel that we are an over-connected society on stimulus overload...put down the cell phone, turn off the laptop, and take a 24 hour fast from Facebook. It's a wonderful thing.

I can understand why some older people are overwhelmed or annoyed at society's dependancy on technology.

However, I hate people who are ignorant about it. I have older coworkers who will mouth off anytime they see someone on their break texting or playing with their phone.

And they sound so stupid. "What's with you stupid kids and your little gadgets?" or "Why is it every time I turn around some kid is on their little phone?"

It's break time. Break time. Leave them the fuck alone. Maybe they don't have anyone to take break with. I know I don't have anyone to take break with these days....and if I had more options on my phone, I'd be doing the same thing on my breaks.

I can think of the opposite situation, where some adults think that teenagers will ONLY entertain themselves with that.

THere was a newspaper (and AdelaideNow article) about teenagers being forgotten in planned communities/suburbs a few months ago. Almost immediately, a vast majority of the comments seemed to state something along the lines that either

                        a) teenagers should be working/getting a weekend job. (this is 11-14 year olds we are talking about here, where in my state, unless it's a family-owned business, you cannot hold a part-time job until you're 15)

                        b) teenagers should be doing nothing but studying (again, 11-17 year olds)

                        c) teenagers will entertain themselves with every random doodad possible and NOW they complain of being bored?

or d) the general idea that "teenagers shouldn't be allowed to have fun."

Basically, it was the fact that playgrounds were being remembered and so were places for adults, but no youth-friendly places in between.

I wonder if protohumans did that back in history.

"In MY day, we didn't need fancy huts to live in! We found a nice dank cave and LIKED IT!"

"In MY day, we didn't bother with no fancy agriculture! We scrounged for berries and were THANKFUL!"

"In MY day, we didn't bother with huntin' and fishin' for meat! We were perfectly happy findin' the carcass of a smilodon kill and eating what was left over!"

At least when my father says that crap... I can reply with the following:

Yes, but let's also not forget that when you were younger, the Earth was flat, and the Grand Canyon was only a crack

It's funny- I remember thinking this same thing around halloween. We were talking about it on another forum, and the issue of teens trick or treating came up. Some people were offended and felt that teens should "find something else to do", and in some locales, teens are actually banned from ToT'ing.
I stated that I used to ToT as a teenager, because there was nothing else to do. I wasn't popular enough to get invited to parties, staying home to give out candy was boring, and there were no teen friendly events. So I had no problems with teens trick or treating as long as they behaved themselves.

I proved my theory with a case-in-point. This past halloween, I went to San Francisco. Before I went, I researched halloween events to see if there were any that looked good. Without fail, virtually all of them were either restricted to 18 or 21+, or 10 or and under. I guess if you're 11-19 years old, you're supposed to just sit at home and twiddle your thumbs.
