well my phone's ring tone is a ring. I'm with you, I just don't get it, it is the weirdest thing. Your walking down the street and all of a sudden you hear music and then it stops. Combine that with headsets so you don't see the phone, you will think you're going insane.

Those are annoying too. But I am talking when you call someone on your phone and the person your calling instead of hearing it ring you hear some song while you wait for the person to pick up.

... I like my ringback tone...
I actually do like people who have one, who keep it the same (or don't change it very often). It gives you a nearly instant verification that you called the right number.
As a relay operator it's great too... rather than having to relay rings I simply type out mscply and the computer relays the rest

I only hate it when it's country or annoying gangster rap.

There's a reason I only text one of my friends. Her ringback tone is always the newest twang twang "Waaaahhhh my truck died! My sister left me!" country song......

I too, dislike it when people choose dumb ringtones, but I also find it advantageous for my phone to sound completely different from most...

I hate those!! The worst ones though is that god awful tune that Verizon's phone is set to. I don't know if it was a real song or not, but it annoyed the piss out of me when I got my first cell phone.

I find hearing snippets of songs to be far less jarring and annoying than a standard ring tone. Even if it's a song I dislike. I prefer a few bars of "Paparazzi" to a piercing series of electronic beeps or jingles.

Custom ringtones don't bother me. I like being able to distinguish my phone ring from everyone else's, and I understand that, so do they!

Answer tones or Ringback tones annoy the piss out of me. I didn't call you to hear your music. I called you to talk to you. Just let it ring for the love of Pete. By setting an answer tone, you are forcing me to listen to something I may not want to hear, and I consider that a bit rude. (mostly I just shrug it off, but in any event, it's not something I'd do to someone else)

I, too, get annoyed by ringback tones. One friend has some very loud music, something along the lines of Slipknot which, due to its inherent volume levels, comes out sounding like it was run through a drive-thru speaker. Another friend has his ringtone set to a song, and I have no idea why it's so grainy and bad-sounding... but I snicker every time his phone starts blaring "She's maaah...cherry pahhh... Cool drink'a watah, such a sweet surprahhhs..." in glorious crackly, moldy 'sound'.

I finally got a cell phone, and though I didn't really feel a need to surf the 'net on my phone, I paid for a month's net service just to make a bunch of mp3 ringtones out of my mp3 collection. If my phone rings and you're nearby, you're likely to hear any number of things: Jazz (Rippington's "Morning Song" and "Weekend In Monaco", Michael Lington's "You & I", Metro's "Mnoth Of Sundays", David Benoit's "Freedom At Midnight"), instrumental stuff (Paul Mauriat's "Love Is Blue", David Foster's "St. Elmo's Fire", Michael Gore's "Terms Of Endearment", Kai Winding's "More" from Mondo Cane), the sax solo from Gerry Rafferty's "Baker Street", anime like the "Steamboy" theme or "Katzen Blut" from The Cat Returns, "Harmonic Voltage" from Animusic (the awesome end chorus with the raw-electricity bass), "Don't Stop Believin" by Journey, "Neverending Story", "Circle Of Life", "Rockin' The Suburbs", "Run With Us" from The Raccoons, Jesse Cook's "Gravity"... What comes up depends totally on my mood, I change them daily...and I don't keep the volume TOO high. In my opinion, having someone next to you maybe hear it and smile = good; making everyone within twenty yards know you're getting a call = showing off brazenly = bad.

it took me 7 years of owning a cell phone to actually buy 3 ringtones.

                          I bought:
                          The imperial march
Renegade-by styx(the jig is up, the news is out, they finally found me...)
                          and of course...
Look what the cat dragged in

lost them when I changed phones
now I have 3 more that i "made" by holding my phone up to my computer
Shockwave from transformers 2 saying "Decepticons mobilize-it is time"(I have a decepticon logo tattooed on me)
and two sound clips from Boondock Saints

You can get free ringtones by going to funformobile.com and searching for a song title or artist.

I personally love ringback tones and have one on my phone. I think it's a cool technology that can only be done with cell phones so I'm having fun with it.

At one point I had a ringtone that was my daughter saying, "Pick up the phone dad pick up the phone"
