  • TRDATM Syndrome

aka "the Rules Don't Apply to Me" Syndrome.

I'm sure these people meant well. But how naive do you have to be to think that after Haiti has suspended adoptions for the time being due to all the chaos, you can just waltz in and take scores of children without permission or paperwork?

I hate it when people assume that the rules don't apply to them!

well of course they don't apply-
    reason one
They're Americans and claiming to be Christian
    Reason two
they've said they aren't engaging in child trafficking so obviously they aren't right

I think these people are just straight-up morons. "Naive" doesn't even begin to cover it.

Well-intentioned morons, maybe, but morons nonetheless.

Let's help kids! Dur, we'll just take them out of their country of origin without asking the government or finding anything out about the kids!

By the way, why didn't they just build the orphanage in fucking HAITI??!!?

"We shall save the children by taking them from this God-less land, and raising them in America! The land of democracy, freedom, and apple pie!" I agree, these children are Haitians, and the preference should be for them to remain in their country of birth, if at all possible.

"The plan was never to go adopt all these kids. The plan was to create this orphanage where kids could live. And kids get adopted out of orphanages. People go down and they're going to fall in love with these kids, and many of these kids will end up getting adopted."
They act like these kids are puppies and kittens.

"Oh you'll just love this sweet little Hatian. Only six years old and house broken, I just know some loving old couple will take to this little heaten right away and deliver him from the Satan worshipping vodoo practicioners who brought this Earthquake upon themselves through their hedonist ways."

Hang on, I just took my yearly human trafficking lesson at work a few weeks ago. I'm pretty sure that what they did falls under...HUMAN TRAFFICKING. Dumbasses.

I took one of those correspondance courses with Sally Struthers. Man what a rip-off. They didn't tell me you were supposed to gag the girl.

Unfortunately, RDAM syndrome is rampant in Idaho. That's where I went to high school. It's a very religious state and very insular, many residents have never lived anywhere else and have no concept that things are done differently outside of there. Anything involving religion or religious conviction is seen as absolutely incorruptible, so of course they didn't need permission or paperwork. They're doing God's work, and God will protect them!

I've never been one to feel that the rules don't apply to ME particularly, but I do feel that they don't apply to particular situations...i.e. with the jaywalking, if it's 2:30 in the morning and there's no crosswalk around anyway, I'm gonna cross. I will cross!

Hell you can even get out of speeding tickets with that argument. If you can prove that the road conditions were safe for your speeding you can usually get at least a discount off the ticket.

                        This is beyond ridiculous.

A new story just came out that basically said that some of these kids are not orphans at all...that their parents had been told that they were going on "some type of holiday from the chaos of Haiti"

Do you have a link for this? Was it the same group as in the OP?

Yes, it was the same group.

                            http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/...263501764.html

Haiti has had a lot of problems with American Evangelical groups (even before the earthquake) who funnel millions of dollars into Haiti trying to "save" Haitian children from the Voodoo religion, which is practiced by something like 2/3 of the population. A lot of these groups take in children from families too poor to care for them (i.e. not orphaned, just too poor to give them opportunities like education) then try to get them adopted into Evangelical families so they can convert them and swell their numbers.

There is a lot of resentment in Haiti over the issue. One one hand, many people give their children to these groups because they know they'll most likely have better lives. On the other hand, many also consider it a form of economic coercion. They can get better lives for their children, but in exchange their children lose their countries' culture and religion in the process.

                              Well said.

Some rules are stupid, and just because they're "the rules" doesn't mean they are right. In those cases, I feel the rules shouldn't apply to me, or anyone else for that matter.

Now that I got that out of the way, what the evangelical group is doing is kidnapping, plain and simple. It also sounds like they have their own religious agenda.
