I'm sure these people meant well. But how naive do you have to be to think that after Haiti has suspended adoptions for the time being due to all the chaos, you can just waltz in and take scores of children without permission or paperwork?

I hate it when people assume that the rules don't apply to them!

Unfortunately, RDAM syndrome is rampant in Idaho. That's where I went to high school. It's a very religious state and very insular, many residents have never lived anywhere else and have no concept that things are done differently outside of there. Anything involving religion or religious conviction is seen as absolutely incorruptible, so of course they didn't need permission or paperwork. They're doing God's work, and God will protect them!

I've never been one to feel that the rules don't apply to ME particularly, but I do feel that they don't apply to particular situations...i.e. with the jaywalking, if it's 2:30 in the morning and there's no crosswalk around anyway, I'm gonna cross. I will cross!

Hell you can even get out of speeding tickets with that argument. If you can prove that the road conditions were safe for your speeding you can usually get at least a discount off the ticket.

Haiti has had a lot of problems with American Evangelical groups (even before the earthquake) who funnel millions of dollars into Haiti trying to "save" Haitian children from the Voodoo religion, which is practiced by something like 2/3 of the population. A lot of these groups take in children from families too poor to care for them (i.e. not orphaned, just too poor to give them opportunities like education) then try to get them adopted into Evangelical families so they can convert them and swell their numbers.

There is a lot of resentment in Haiti over the issue. One one hand, many people give their children to these groups because they know they'll most likely have better lives. On the other hand, many also consider it a form of economic coercion. They can get better lives for their children, but in exchange their children lose their countries' culture and religion in the process.

Some rules are stupid, and just because they're "the rules" doesn't mean they are right. In those cases, I feel the rules shouldn't apply to me, or anyone else for that matter.

Now that I got that out of the way, what the evangelical group is doing is kidnapping, plain and simple. It also sounds like they have their own religious agenda.
