  • Looking different deserves disrespect.

Lately I've been mulling over ideas for an essay on Cosplay and Etiquette.
Not only ettiquete for cosplayers when dealing with their own groups or interacting with the public, but including a section for non-cosplayers as well, aimed to educate them a little and generally make interaction better for everyone.

One thing I plan to mention, but feel it's also worthy of a stand-alone rant is this:

The belief/attitude some people have that if there's anything different about you, then somehow, that gives others a pass to say nasty things/ touch you without permission/ abuse their power when dealing with you/ otherwise chuck the rules of common decency. And simultaneously, you lose the right to be offended at the other person's behavior.

It's not just people who look majorly different from the norm, such as goths and cosplayers who get this. Even completely normal-looking people with something unique about them get this- I've heard of people with really long or strikingly coloured hair having total strangers come up and just touch or run their fingers through it without so much as a "by your leave". I've heard of people with partially visible tattoos having their sleeves pulled up by strangers who want to see the design, again without asking. And ask almost any pregnant woman how sick she is of her body somehow being communal property- people feel it's okay to just walk up and rub her belly.

And the comments? Again, it's not just those who look majorly different who get verbally abused. Again, totally normal-looking folks who dye their hair have been known to get nasty comments made about their alleged sexuality or deviance, and questions about the "curtains matching the drapes". Or the nasty remarks made about tattoos, or the circumstances of a stranger's pregnancy, or a stranger's weight.

So a total stranger comes up to you, grabs or touches without permission, and makes some...interesting assumptions about your life or lack thereof, your mental status, or whatever, and now because you had the temerity to be even the slightest bit different, you're the one with the problem because their rude or hurtful behavior offends you.
I HATE THIS! I hate it with the fury of 1,000 suns gone supernova. Why?

One, its pure "Blame the victim". It's okay to be nasty to somebody who looks different, after all they must be different because they want attention. It couldn't possibly be that they wear different clothes, got a tattoo or dyed their hair simply because it made them happy. Or got pregnant because they really wanted a family. Nooo. They just did it for attention, and because of that it's okay to abuse them.

Two, it sends a bad message about conformity- After all, if you don't want to be treated like shit, play the chameleon, knuckle under and conform like a good little drone. If you get abused by some stranger, it's all your fault for not blending in with the wallpaper.

Three, it ignores the fact that the antagonist just committed a MAJOR ettiquette faux pas by laying hands on you and/or showering you in verbal bile. Because you "provoked them", their bad behavior gets swept under the rug.

Four, it gives people a pass to act badly towards others. After all, they can't help it when they see somebody different in any way, they're curious and can't be expected to practice self moderation. They are relieved of the burden of learning any sort of self-control or of even the most basic of civilized bahavior.

I used to get comments like that back when I had severe problems with excema on my hands - people were always coming up to me and asking things like "What's wrong with your hands?". "OMG.....does that hurt?", and "Have you tried (name of cream/lotion)?" Most of the time I don't think people were trying to be sucky or rude, but it got on my nerves that they thought it was and appropriate thing to comment on.

I dressed as a goth when it wasn't fashionable. I once had some dickhead throw a glass Coke bottle at my head.

I've got most of my left arm, my chest, parts of my right arm and some other parts tattooed - it's amazing, the liberties that people take.

This is the what our society has become. Racism, sexism, and all other forms of discrimination all stem from the same thing.

We are raised to believe that we are better or can be better than everyone else. We continue to raise our kids in the same fashion.

People insult other people to make themselves feel better about themselves. "I'm better than you because I'm skinny/rich/muscular/white/straight/successful/educated/etc etc etc etc"

It's just unfortunate that it's too difficult to build up someone's self-confidence, self-worth, and self-respect without crossing over into areas that may promote this.

I had to tape my glasses together a few years back before I could afford to replace them.

I'd get every asshole under the sun from coworkers to customers looking at me and saying, "Your glasses are broken."

No shit. You know I was afraid the public might catch on to my clever disguise but nope, the boys at headquarters were sure the tape would confuse you.

There was a girl who had a total freak out session when she saw that I have...

                ...a crooked fingernail.

Barely noticable but yet, she acted like I was a leper or something.

                  Seriously? Who cares ?

The things that some people take offense at.....just amazes me. Must be nice to not have anything better to do OR think about.

What do you mean "has become"? There is less racism, sexism, and discrimination now then any other time in history. Besides if unwanted attention from your hair color, dress, or whatever is too horrible to take then just change it. Everybody doesn't have to look the same but if you have orange hair, are covered in tattoos, and dress like you found your clothes in The Sex Pistols dumpster then gee, maybe you will get some extra attention from people. 99.999999999% of those people are only doing it for attention anyways.

Shit I didn't realize that 1% was that many people because my entire group is made up of people who are different and most of us would rather just be treated like every one else.

We don't dress any particular way for attention but because hey that pair of jeans looks awesome and isn't that a killer tshirt makes up our shopping mentality.

I dress the way I do cuz I like to. Why should I become a boring drone just cuz people might disapprove? I don't dress the way I do for attention; to me, that kind of attitude is the same as people who say that self harmers cut for attention. And it's wrong. If I wanted attention, I'd do a streak.

There is not less discrimination now than in the past. It's simply hidden more.

If there was no discrimination, there would be no reason or need for discrimination laws or programs like Affirmative Action.

You disagree with what our society has become? Take a look around you and tell me that we do not live in a society based on the haves and the have nots. Materialism and conformity run rampant through our society. It drives our economy, fuels our "entertainment," is what convinces women that they need to be 105 pounds with a D cup.

There is no originality anymore. What may be unique to you is already a part of some greater trend.

In the past we didn't have anti discrimination laws, so by default there was more discrimination. When was the last time you saw a slave? Are you telling me there is more discrimination now then at a point in history when one person could own another? Or that we have more discrimination now then during the Holocaust?

Besides affirmative action is just a different form of discrimination. Just because something benefits minorities at the expense of whites it doesn't mean it isn't discrimination.

                              Right on, Lace Neil Singer.
I design and make some of my own clothes- I do it for me and my own happiness. If other people like it, cool. If I only did it for attention, I would go get a mascot suit. Or go streaking. With my plus-sized self, I'm sure it would get attention in spades.

Maybe the people who can't keep their hands and mouths to themselves are the ones who need to change, not us.
