  • "Not a real job"

I'm sick of people thinking that retail and teaching aren't real jobs. Or in the case of the latter, that teachers have never held a "real" job.

Just what is a real job exactly?

The former I think we can all understand as that's come from CS.com. But the latter is more recent.

Basically, in my state, they finally settled out on the teacher's salaries...15.75% payrise over 3 years for teachers who have been teaching for X number of years. That's basically 5.25% a year. Unfortunately, that has brought out the sheer number of teacher-bashers, ignorant people and others who just think that teachers have "never known what its like in the REAL world because they've been at school since age 5."

In my experience the world is the same crap highschool had on a larger scale. Having worked as a teacher, I find this particular rubbish especially annoying.

I put it down to ignorance. The only thing most people know about teaching is what they remember from their childhood. That being woefully inadequate, there's really no reason NOT to think that morons would follow...

I remember seeing something similar, when an article about the Port of Oakland was posted online. The reader comments were fantastically stupid, especially concerning longshoreman's pay. Apparently if you're a blue collar worker, you don't deserve to be paid a living wage.

The suits making those comments have no clue how dangerous it can be out there. Longshoremen (and women) work in dangerous conditions, in all weather. A crane operator holds other people's lives in their hands, in a way that few white collars ever will. Tell me WHY these men and women don't deserve their pay, again?

what kind of crazy people think teaching isn't a real job? You're trusting your kids education to these people, plus you had your own education with these people, and it's not a real job? Holy shit.

As for blue collar I think they deserve way more pay than they get. The pay scales are messed up in this country. Sports figures make millions for pushing/bouncing/throwing/hitting a ball of some sort around while the person doing a job that is dangerous and out in the weather doesn't make enough to live on.

It's classism, plain and simple. If there's one thing I've learned on CS.com it's that customer service people don't have it easy. The fact that any of you can get through the day without saying "Fuck it" and walking out is just amazing with all the bull shit you have to put up with.

And teaching not a real job? WTF? A job is a job people!

That doesn't make them worth MILLIONS. It still comes down to chasing a ball in some fashion....

I don't know. Maybe they're confusing the difference between a job and a career.

They are worth that much only because so many people enjoy sports. I think they are over paid but the only way to change things is to make people not pay to see them.

I believe that retail is a real job and it gives people a way to earn money for the necessities like food, shelter, and bills. Also, if retail jobs didn't exist, everyone would have to fend for themselves.

                          Not a "real job".
What a stupid phrase. What the hell is it, then? A virtual job? A fictional job? I'm pretty sure that I do in fact go to the same location every day to do something fairly repetitive for someone else, and, in return, I'm pretty sure that they give me money. Yup, that happened. Sounds real enough to me.

Most of it seems to centre around the fact that they've never gotten a "real job" in the first place and they've spent their whole lives in school. Alternately, it's the fact that kids are "supposedly" getting dumber and rather than blame it on both parents and teachers, they seem to automatically blame the teachers and tar ALL teachers with the same brush.

This is the link to the article I referred to in the first post: http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/teache...-1225828824202

Read the comments. Mine are all under the name "sanity".

The other new trend around those parts seems to be that those who do uni degrees NOW will be spending their lives "flipping burgers"...

The ages of the teachers do come under fire a little bit in those comments as well-again, no problem there unless the age is being used as an excuse to be a jackass, or they're just incompetent outright.

Barring political comments, the teacher bashing seems to stem around a few points:

                            1) That teachers only work from 9-3 (I know it's more like 7:30-whenever)
                            2) That teachers have spent their lives only in schools of various levels (again not true-two of my current coworkers are studying teaching and a good half a dozen are studying at my old store)
                            3) That teachers are greedy and only care about the money (not 100% true, the AEU and teachers are two separate entities.)
                            4) That teachers get 12 weeks holiday (definitely not true, I've seen teachers hanging around my school during the periods I had vacation care)

I had a customer tell me the other day if I wanted a "real job" to come and work with her. I asked her where at, and she said the Department of Corrections. Thanks, but no thanks. I interviewed at the DOC several times for an officer position but was thoroughly relieved they didn't hire me. After the fact I realized I didn't have the personality or the figurative 'balls' to be a CO, and told the customer this. She insisted that she was quiet and laid back too, and still insisted that I come down and apply again, because it's a 'real job'
