  • Inconsiderate smokers!!

This isn't to paint all smokers with the same brush. If you want to smoke, that's your decision, all well and good. Differing opinions and all that.

But when I'm standing under an enclosed bus stop, shivering from the cold and the wet, and you walk underneath and stand next to me, then light up so the secondhand smoke goes right in my face? Oh, we have a problem now! Bonus points because I had to pointedly stare at you, then the lit cigarette, then the "No Smoking" sign that was exactly 2.5 inches above our heads. Well done, you!! Whining that it's cold and windy and wet outside is not a good reason to break the law, and blow smoke in my face!

Like I said, smoking is your choice, whatever. But do not try to claim exceptions to any rules or laws for it. I follow the laws even when I disagree with them because they're the laws. I look both ways, I don't jaywalk, I pay my taxes, and if the sign says no smoking/eating/drinking/flash photography, I obey it! Try it sometime!!

No, I'm not out to get you or lecture you or tell you you're going to kill yourself, it's not my place. But again, when there's a sign mere inches above your head telling you NOT to do something, and you do it anyway, don't be TOO amazed when I snap a picture with my cell phone to show the nice campus police that are just a few blocks away. Oh, hey, look, they even list WHICH law you're breaking on the sign, and the penalties!

    I hate people...

Agreed. Inconsiderate smokers are the ones who ruined it for us good smokers. And it's not so hard to be a considerate smoker. Just some basic decency that I would expect from anyone who's doing something that can potentially annoy me.

Standing down wind is a good one. If I'm out in a publicish place I try to stand so the smoke is blowing away from everyone else near me. If I'm standing stationary smoking and someone walks by me, I'll hold me breath for an extra three or four seconds so they can walk by without getting smoked breathed on them. I genuinely try to find an appropriate place to discard my cigarette when I'm done. If I can't, and I see the ground is covered in butts well tough shit, one more aint gonna hurt, but I do genuinely try. If I'm at someone else's house and need to step out for a smoke, I'll also make sure I don't litter their property with it if I can avoid it.

On behalf of considerate smokers everywhere, THANKS for realizing that we're not *all* the spawn of satan. I get so tired of being painted with that brush! The smokers you describe make me furious - not only for treating people badly, but for making the rest of us look bad.

And those people who blow smoke in your face in an enclosed area are assholes and I'm sorry to share a habit with them.
