Speaking of getting dirty looks for your job, I just finished the interview process for a job in the Census Bureau. I am very excited about this, because I have been searching for a job here for over a year and have gotten no bites. So I tell my wife's family about this news. And some of them gave me the stink eye, because I am working for "the government", and they are very distrustful of the government. It's the fucking Census Bureau, for god's sakes!

I think wal-mart is awesome. Everyone's got some story about how this wal-mart they go to sucks, but that's any company. There's good people and bad people. You could take the greatest company in the world and argue that in some store in wichita there's a real asshole working at the register - does that really mean the whole company sucks?

No, but it does mean that I'm not going to go to their store in Wichita

My ex went on a similar tirade upon hearing I was waiting on a call from the Census (as far as I know I'm in, they just need to find an available opening in my area). At least it's a job, and for eight weeks it will pay much better than anything else I could get (in my state they're actually increasing the starting pay because they're apparently having trouble finding people).

Hmmmm, we might actually live in the same state, because they did the same thing here. Michigan census workers get paid two dollars more an hour than Ohio census workers.

Here's another anti-Walmart community: when our local WalMart tried to expand to a Supercenter, there suddenly became a ban on "big box" stores. Of course, we have some grocery chains headquartered locally that couldn't expand either...how's that for saving local business, eh?

I never got it. Walmart is the American dream: a small shop that grew to become an international corporation. Because they realized that dream, they become the bad guys?

The became the bad guy because all of a sudden small stores can't overcharge customers when Walmart comes to town.

I used to be a cashier at Walmart for almost four years. It actually wasn't a bad job. I got treated well and whenever something unexpected came up they worked with me. I do think it can depend on which walmart you work at though. My friend currently works at walmart and gets treated like crap there. Other then that...Walmart has never really bothered me.

I shop at Wal-mart once a week only because I can get stuff there that no one else carries. It's a good place to get my work clothes too. I work one summer there and it wasn't too bad. Where I worked they did all of the breaks by the books and took really good care of you if you needed something.

The area of Vancouver that I live in actively keeps wal-mart out. We only have 4 chain stores and they are much smaller than usual, so it's not just wal-mart but all big box stores that are banned or have to adhere to the EXTREMELY STRICT district plan.

It was one of the reasons I moved to this part of the GVR, the small country town feeling. I personally don't like big box stores of any kind although I admit I shop there, but only if I have to. I am lucky in that its only a 40 minute drive to a wal-mart should I need one, I have been once in the last 6 months.

When I lived in the interior the town was small and there was barely any stores and wal-mart was practically the only department store. I hated having to shop there but I did. I hated not having the choice

I saw a documentary once where a guy in a rich neighborhood in this town was trying to prevent a Walmart being put into the poor neighborhood because he didn't want that in his town.

He failed and the woman whose Husband couldn't work and was trying to raise her kids was grateful that she got off public assistance and got a job.

I saw something like that on Bullshit. It was some sort of local politician who opposed Walmart on principal, and it just happened that the local meat packers union also opposed Walmart, and just happened that the meat packers also contributed heavily to his campaign. But Walmart of course is the evil one, what with their low prices and wide selection.

Which are the exact same qualities of Target, KMart and Shopko (all of which have areas in which they are cheaper than Wal Mart... of course Wal Mart also has areas cheaper than them)... yet somehow shopping at those places is more virtuous (or at least not as evil).

At least I don't even pretend that it has to do with virtue, I like the customer service better at Target, Target has the better quality kitchen supplies (at least in my price range) and K-Mart has the cheaper clothes. Virtue has nothing to do with the decision... where Wal-Mart does better (photo and general non food shopping) I have no problem going to Wal-Mart (though I'll still avoid it because they are always a disaster zone here... it is the 6 kid family fairground most days).
