While I agree that it would be nice if parents monitored their children more closely on the internet (this would help to cut back on the oversexualization of children), I do think there are far bigger demons out there on the big wide 'net than a Facebook app.

It is a small symptom of a much larger problem.

It may be just a Facebook app, but when do you start to become concerned about what children are being exposed to?

Also, as Kiwi pointed out, this child I am talking about really shouldn't be on Facebook to begin with.

Can't you speak with her mother and ask how she allowed her underage daughter to have a Facebook page?

I probably could talk to her mother about it, but it's awkward because I work with her and her fiance.
If she doesn't handle it well, and resents my meddling, it would be a little hard to face them every day.

I just figured I'd vent a bit about it here and possibly have a discussion about the lack of parental monitoring.

I'm sure this little girl isn't the only child whose parents don't pay attention to her internet usage.

Agreed. I mean, yeah, my younger cousins are on facebook (however, they are very closely monitored. Whomever they become friends with, my aunt becomes friends with. Their real birthday is not displayed.), but most of the drama comes from the people who are in high school on my face book. This is a reoccurring status:

"Like OMGZ!!!!111!!! I HATE SCHOOL! (INSERT NAME) IS SUCH A BITCH BECAUSE (INSERT ACTION). "

As far as having a crush at age 11, I can recall my first crush. I was in kindergarten.

Certainly not a "lover" sort of deal, but as soon as you become socially aware enough to see that other people are likable you can have your first crush.

I do agree that some parents don't do a good job of stopping their kids from accessing things that are harmful, but that's often because kids are good at getting around roadblocks and not that the parents don't try to keep them from accessing things that could be harmful. Not *always* just *often*.

That's true, but in this case, her mother is on Facebook and must see the app updates.

Not true, you can decide in your setting who can see what, I have many LDS friend who are on lockdown my mother can't see most of my stuff either because I she would get very upset if I wouldn't "friend her" but would be even more upset if I dared post a drunken picture.

Personally, I'm with you in thinking that the word "lover" holds a pretty sexual connotation. However, apparently not everyone else does, as seen from earlier posts in this thread. That's not good, bad, or indifferent, just a difference in opinion. Anyway, my point is, maybe the mother just doesn't think "lover" is a sexual word so she's not bothered by it.

I gotta go with the group here. "Lover" to me not only has sexual connotation, but I see it as almost exclusively sexual. A girlfriend is someone you have a relationship with, or a wife/husband or whatever. "Lover" is just that person you sleep with on thursday night.
