  • I feel like this is bullcrap

Just started a new job, and although most of it looks pretty cool I find two policies they have to be highly annoying and I really hope I never have a problem with them, but just the notion that its the way they do things pisses me off.

The first is their health policy - if you've got the flu, or flu-like symptoms, cough, runny nose, itchy eyes, or diarrhea/vomiting, you are forbidden from coming to work.

That's fine with me, but they also get really bitchy if people miss work. Even for those reasons, they still complain and warn and threaten you.

I feel like this is one of those pick one or the other situations. You can have your cake, or you can eat it, but you can't have both. I feel like you're forfeiting your right to bitch and whine and discipline me if you're forcing me to stay home in the first place.

The second thing that sucks is the work week. Sun-Thursday. That's fine. But SOMETIMES they have to work Friday, and when they do, it's mandatory. Fuck the doctor, you'll get better. Fuck Metallica, they'll come back to town soon. Anni..vers....ary? Fuck it, you'll have another one next year. Get in here or find a new job.

I can't remember what the term is, but you're supposed to be paid for being on call like that. Is it per diem? No. Maybe. I don't know. But I do know that it's bullshit that I be expected to keep every friday for the rest of my life cleared on the off chance they might have to call me in - FOR FREE. No no no. That carries a hefty fee, my friend!

Well hopefully it won't come up too much and its just a regular part of my distrust of most authority figures.

The first policy sounds like its just them covering their butts. I'm sure if you have a runny nose they will let you work.

As for the second one, that blows, but as you said in your other topic this is the sort of job that caters to excons and people without many options. They have the power to jerk you around. The reason people go to college and live responcibly is so they can get jobs where they have the power not the employer. I suggest you keep looking for something better.

If only it were that simple. Not a lot of jobs around here, and this is the only one i've found that pays more than minimum wage.

Are you hourly, DrF? If you are, and they call you in on Friday, they better be paying you overtime (assuming that you're already working 40 hours a week Sun-Thurs.) Even if you're not working a full 40, if you're hourly they still have to pay you for every hour that you work on Friday.

Aye, it is hourly. I'm actually looking forward to the overtime. The job pays pretty well and I'm hoping to make some quick cash here. I just hate it when a company thinks they own me 24/7. "You have to do what we say for free because we're just that damn powerful."

Be careful, DrFarookh. I mean, I don't know you very well, but it sounds like your brain is trying to psych you out of this job. That's not accusing, it's an unemployed guy rooting for a recently employed guy.

I will grant you that the mandatory Fridays idea is bullcrap, depending on when they tell you that you have to come in that friday. If they tell you monday or tuesday, not too bad. If they tell you thursday, that sucks wampa ass. I dealt with that whole scene at a lumber yard I worked at long ago, what made it even worse was that we were supposed to be working 4-10's (4 days at 10 hours a day, giving you your forty and an extra day off). Well, they'd STILL pull that mandatory friday crap, and when I asked if mandatory overtime like that was even legal, they just sorta shrugged. I got pushed out of the company not too long afterward.

You're probably right. There's a hundred reasons why I don't want this job. It also doesn't help that I kind of don't have a choice. I basically have to take it. Leaves a bit of a sour taste in my mouth.

Then there's the typical bullshit I know I'm gonna have to deal with...like when Bossman A tells me to do something one way, and Bossman B says do it another way. Bossman A is the ranking officer, but I only see him once a week. Bossman B is out of the floor with me all day. He can make my life suck.

Or when Bossman says "Make sure you report it to me if you see anything unsafe." And then when I report something he acts like I'm bothering him.

Or when Bossman says "Hey, I need you to stop gutting the fish and go clean up this mess." Then 2 minutes later "WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING!????? YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO BE GUTTING FISH!"

This happens at every job I have. Most people say its all my fault, because there's no way on earth that many people can be such douchebags.

I suck at working. As much as I would love to have a good job that I'm good at, I just suck at it. I can't deal with people's bullshit. Likewise, my wife sucks at being home with the kids. She wants nothing more than to be a housewife, but she SUCKS at it. I briefly worked last fall, and I hated it because I had to come home to pure suck. Which is another thing I don't want to happen again. I want to come home and not deal with the kids. I want to come home and rest and watch TV, because I've been working my ass off all day. Instead I'll have to come home, manage the kids, comfort my wife who's on the couch crying, make dinner, clean, and then sit there bored while she watches TV shows I don't like. If I'm lucky, I get a half-assed two minute massage.

I'm a much better homebody. She's a much better worker. She tolerates the bullshit better, and I take care of her when she gets home better. She gets like a 30 minute massage every night when she's working fulltime, has dinner ready for her when she gets home, she's shielded from the kids enough to be able to relax, etc...I'm just better at it. And she's better at the working. She can go the extra mile, and not get upset at the random bullshit she'll have to deal with. Just takes it in stride. I get people screwing with me at work and I just want to burn the place down.

Unfortunately, I'm the man, and I must have a job. A man who's not working may as well go kill himself (pretty much the attitude around here in redneckville where I live).

See, this is where I wish I knew you better, Doc. I would feel weird pushing you for more details or making you spill your guts to a total stranger. What I WILL say is that what I got from your last post boils down to: "Wife. Wife wife wife wife wife wife wife." Again, NOT an accusation. It sounds like you and your wife have some real problems, and it's poisoning how you feel about working. In the meantime, all I can tell you is to slog your way through it for now, but keep your ears open for the first job opportunity out of the craphole. Gutting fish... ugh...

No no no that's not what I meant at all - I was just pointing out how we suck at our respective roles sometimes. I suck at having jobs, too. I think the only reason I was able to hold down my old job for as long as I did was because I was the most reliable at showing up and covering the extra shifts so they knew they couldn't do without me for a long time.

Some men make better househusbands then women do housewives.

Wish you could find a work from home Job DrF, sounds like you would be a wonderful stay at home husband... but I know what it is like in redneckville. Sounds like where I grew up... what your female and not popping out babies??? that is a man's job etc...
