It is BS. I dress up when I am going to pick up an application or going to an interview. I do hate that they can discriminate against an potential employee because of whatever reason. You know they do. Oh he is wearing a band-aid. Well, he is not going to take the job seriously

lol, Doc. I have no fear when it comes to drug tests, I was too much of a nerd to ever get started with anything stronger than cigarettes and caffeine. I don't like feeling out of control, I don't even get drunk.

You don't always have to wear a shirt and tie. Most hiring managers will say "Dress for the job you want." If you show up to an interview with the local Carpenter's/Electrician's Union dressed in a suit, they'll interview you and you probably won't get a call back. Show up to an interview for a corporate position in jeans and a polo and you probably won't even get in the door. Fast food/mini-mart? Jeans and a t-shirt would probably be fine.

Costs? You can goto a local WalMart and get a shirt and tie for pretty cheap. If you're not applying for a job that requires you to wear one every day, all you need is one set for interviews.

As for interviews themselves, they are designed for you to sell yourself. Your application/resume already told them what you have done and what you can do. The interview is your opportunity to convince them why they should hire you over the other applicants.

Don't have enough self-esteem, self-value, or self-worth to be able to do that? Well... There are always those "Work From Home" tele-sales and assembly jobs you can try.

A lot of it is bullshit that has been passed down from another bullshitter. The interviewer doesn't give a shit that you didn't maintain eye contact for 100% of the interviewer, but someone told him it matters, so he's judging you based on that.

I can't keep eye contact for 100% of the time. I get the sense that I'm "staring", and also that I'm being stared at. That's when I get flustered. My full attention is on the interviewer, but my eyeballs may not be focused lasers (not wandering, but not directly staring either). I don't like the idea of being penalized for that.

I know what you mean. Where I live, eye contact is a challenge. You don't look someone in the eye unless you're looking for trouble. It's like living with wild dogs I swear. But the notion has stuck and eye contact makes me uncomfortable. Sometimes I just stare at the bridge of their nose if I really need to. Or if I'm intentionally trying to make someone uncomfortable.

When I used to interview people they had all these bullshit things to look out for. One was what the company called "Lying words" - words that if the person uses them, you know they are full of shit. BasicalLY, honestLY, seriousLY, etc....so if someone uses any of those words they MUST be a liar and a thief and a child molester and I need to call the police and have them shot immediately1!!!1!!!11

By the way, since I announced the interview in this thread, I guess I'll announce in this thread that I got the job!!!! Finally, after over a year of dead ends! The interview itself was a breeze, and I even kept in mind a few things mentioned in this thread while going through it.

I hate how everything is online now too, so I went to a job fair and most of the companies gave me a piece of paper of where to go and apply, they weren't taking resumes and to my knowledge weren't even keeping track of who they met. I haven't had an interview in months, because I keep getting nice rejection e-mails, because I don't have enough experience, or im over qualified. Also, since I just graduated college, I still don't know EXACTLY what I want to do as a job because of all the possibilities.

Same here. I actually do not mine applying online. But it gets to me, when I have to make an account with a website to apply. Why, if I am going to get hired. I am not going to go back to that website
