  • Grant Proposals

Oh, you little (well, not quite so little) bastard! I thought research papers sucked. This is a crapload worse. It's like a research paper on uber-steroids.

I'm currently writing a grant proposal for a project to determine if a specific colon cancer suppressing gene, MLH1, also has an effect on suppressing breast cancer. I really thought someone would have done this by now and I'm sure people have, but I can only find stuff on MLH1 and colon cancer, since that's what MLH1 is mainly related to.

Then my teacher gave us an outline of how to make a grant proposal:

Abstract - 1 page (250 words max)...um, wtf? Which one is it? 250 words won't give you a page!
    Specific Aims - 1 page (2 short paragraphs, 2-3 sentences each)...What!?
    Background & Significance - 2-3 pages...Ok, I'm fine with that.
Materials & Methods - 2-3 Pages...Well, in a grant proposal, you list your materials and only explain out of the ordinary techniques you will use. That's not going to even come close to 2 pages.
Expected Outcomes/Alternative Approaches - 2 pages...Um, no way is there enough to write about those two to hit two pages.
    References - 1 page...whatevs.

And my teacher said he'd post examples of good grant proposals since most of us haven't written one before. Still hasn't posted them and he never answers his email.

This is what I get for taking a biology minor, and requesting special permission to take a 400 level course instead of zoology or botany...

Husband writes grant proposals all the time, and he's damn good; in fact his PI hasn't paid him a dime since he's worked in his lab because we are living on AHA grants.

If you need help I could quiz him for advice.

If the abstract is anything like an abstract in APA style, they want no more than 250 words, on its own page (lots of blank space!). I'd imagine that the Specific Aims is similar.
