  • Able bodied people who walk s-l-o-w-l-y in crosswalks

    Pet Peeve alert!

When I am walking for exercise and happen to cross the street at a crosswalk, and a car happens to be waiting - I quicken my pace a bit as a courtesy.

Granted, I don't RUN across the street, but I do feel that it's courteous not to dawdle or to move at a snails pace.

It drives me insane when I stop at a crosswalk and the person within it just STROLLS along, sometimes even slowing down.

wtf? Why do people do this?

Oh good lord, I hate this! Especially when it's a big group of teenagers or something. That or the ones that just randomly cross the street, 10 feet from the crosswalk.

It's the one time the whole world comes to a screeching halt just for them, and they want to stretch it out as long as possible.

I will walk slower if the person is covering the crosswalk revving their engine and getting irritated that I am not walking faster when their light is red and won't turn green until well after I am acrossed.

I hate able bodied people who walk alarmingly slow and clog up sidewalks or walkways or hallways.

I walk slow normally but I make sure I am not in the main flow of foot traffic.

At least you have the courtesy to do that.

There's a guy at work, everyone calls him Mr Bean, if he isn't going to break or going home, he walks at a snail's pace up and down the halls. In the middle of the hallway. This guy is probably 20-25 and normal weight. Obviously he walks slow on purpose when he is working or has to go back to work.

                  Right.

I definitely don't expect people to sprint or run as I'm waiting, but the ones that slow down and *saunter* across the street when they see people waiting? Gah! Drives me insane!

But yeah, Jack - I'm with you on the idiots that sit and rev their engines and act all impatient. I would slow down to a crawl in the crosswalk for them too!

As devil's advocate, I must say...how do you know they are able-bodied? Obviously if it's someone you know or work with, that's one thing. But a stranger walking slowly across the crosswalk...how do you know they can go any faster?

I look fine. Totally healthy. I have what's called an 'invisible disability'. Anyone would look at me and see a 30 something in decent shape who clearly should be able to walk or climb stairs at a decent pace...but I can't always. Some days I can jog those stairs, other days I'm stopping every third step to recover.

So chances are on a given day, I'll be a slowpoke ambling across that crosswalk even though I look perfectly fit.

Now folks who start off at a normal pace and then slow down when they see you or to answer their cell or something like that...yeah, douchebags.

                      That's what I mean. I guess I wasn't clear.

People are notorious for doing this at a gym nearby my house. The crosswalk is clearly marked and drivers do stop...but everyone walks slower than molasses. Doesn't help that while it's on a back road, it serves as a shortcut to the highway to people going to/from work.

While it is a good point that you can't necessarily TELL if someone is able-bodied by just looking at them, but in this case, they're all gym regulars...meaning they're able-bodied enough to walk at the pace of a normal human being.
