  • Your job means your stupid

I knew a very smart guy that decided he was happier driving a Taxi. Most days I am happy being a CSR. I have read and studied Shakespeare, Thoreau, Skinner, Kerouac, philosophy, mathematics, etc.

    I never stop learning.

This all is to illustrate that I find it very annoying when a customer tries to teach me how to average out their bill!!

I am sorry unlike all the people saying, "When will I need this?" I said okay so averages work like this good to know.

Just because I have a "lower" job doesn't make me dumber or less knowledgable than you.

One of my favorite coworkers at the restaurant I worked for had an engineering degree, and had been a teacher for years before he quit to be a server.

Yeah but smart people understand them!

      Aristotle was not Belgian.

The central message of Bhuddism is not "every man for himself"

The London Underground is not a political movement!

Those are all mistakes - I looked them up!

(Sorry, I couldn't resist the "A Fish Called Wanda" reference)

I've seen it, too. Just because you work in retail means your a drop out who will never amount to anything. That goes double of you're over 21.

Yeah, I have a cooshy corporate job now in IT but sometimes I dream of a simpler life - serving deli meats and platters in a grocerey store was fun, running a seafood department was fun, too. Working in a library was great.

If we're so stupid, then how come you're coming to US for help?

I so wish I could get away with saying that sometime.

Honestly other than how much I get paid I love what do for a living and once all of my debt is paid off and I can afford to live alone again my income level won't be an issue.

I see these "so much smarter than me people" working on things on their way home and I think, "Heeeehheeeee I finished work the instant I left my office"

I work retail by choice. I get comments from people who don't know me who assume I'm uneducated. I also get comments from people who DO know me (and know my educational background) and assume that I just haven't had any luck finding a "real" job.

Friends and family are constantly calling me with jobs they've heard about that I'd be "perfect" for. They don't consider that I'd HATE that job.

          I like retail because:

It's a different experience every single day.

I spend the day talking to people: some are wonderful, some not-so-wonderful, but every one of them interesting in some way.

I love merchandising, and I work for a company that allows me a great deal of creativity in my point-of-sale displays.

Many of my co-workers are students. Working with young people is energizing and rewarding, and they keep me updated on what's cool. I like that.

If work calls me at home on my day off, I don't have to answer the phone if I don't feel like it. I'm paid hourly, and I'm not on call.

I get tons of free product, and a huge discount on everything I buy.

I need to be moving, constantly. My personal hell would be a cubicle. The worst part of my day is the hour or so of paperwork I need to do every morning. After that, I'm usually out on the sales floor and happily on the move.

I have job security that would make anyone envious. Even if my store were to close, I'd have my pick of retail positions anywhere else in the city. There's a major advantage to being massively over-qualified for your choice of field. I have fantastic references, and I'd be the last to go if the store were to require lay-offs.

I'll admit that I'm in a luxurious position in that my husband is the major bread winner in our household. I can work a relatively poor paying job because we depend on his income and not mine. If he were to lose his job, I'd have to leave retail and find something that paid better.

I personally can't wait to find a real job because I hate the "your stupid stereotype", or just because I went to college my coworkers won't let me make a mistake, I mean seriously so what if I right a note on 2hrs of sleep and it is spelled wrong, going to college doesn't necessarily mean you had to learn how to spell odd words often.

oh and using "right" instead of "write" was for dramatic effect. or is affect, eh those two always screwed with me, and for the record I have an electronics background doing lots of math, not an english major I guess I could see the spelling thing if I was an English major.

The reason I hate my job is the pay is complete crap and they don't seem to want to promote me, which isn't helping me stick around

I get that with my job right now. I am working for the U.S. Census as a Enumenator / Crew Leader Assistant. A few people thought that I was stupid. But what they don't know, is that I am taking an online class to get Insurance License . I already have that job, I just need to take the online class .

Customer service rep is a great way to get your foot in the door at companies. Most of the higher ups in any call center were once on the phones just like me

that is my job to a T

Look we have all heard the stereotype of the pizza/chinnese/sandwich/whatever delivery driver ie.
                  1. HS dropout
                  2. heavy stoner (or worse) and to boot whilst driving
                  3. loser (whatever defination you want to use)
                  4. uninltelligent moron
                  5. no education above dropping out of HS
                  6. no ambition in life in general
                  7. makes lots and lots of money
                  8. total interovert geektype
                  9. bad almost criminal driving habits

Now I have to say that like most of you I get the "GET A REAL JOB" or "Go back to school and get your GED you loser" or some such nonsense

First I have to say I DID have different "real" jobs. I have 2 degrees one 2 year (computer programmingt) and one BSBA/emphsis on MIS CIS and programming. I was in the white collar world for 12 years after I was in fast food for 11 years (6 years of that in management)

                  stike one

no ambitions in life???? I did try and move up and better myself.

but then I got tired of being the throw away employee, the unappreciated employee, the "let's make him do all of the work then throw him in a corner" empoyee, etc.

                  Strike two

Lots of money???? where is this these days?? that is a bygone era. spiraling fuel/repair/maintneance/insurance costs and falling company reimbusment AND falling tips will eventually kill off delivery.

                  strike three

intervert??? maybe to you but then again I am a vampire who only comes out at night who also hangs out with other vampires.

                  ball one

bad drivbing habits??? yes I will admit there is a small percentage of my fellow drivers that have take to agressive driving habits but the general population has a, IMHO, greater % of bad drivers. cause IF I get too many complaints or get even one ticket (on or OFF of the job), I get taken off the road (meaing I can no longer do delivery) for at the very least 6 months or I get terminated. AND if I am in volved in an accident this can be the one and only thing that can get me terminated IMMEDIATELY.

Most of us delivery people are good drivers and are far more careful about our habits simply because I HAVE A LIGHTED SIGN on my roof with the pizza places PHONE NUMBER on it.

                  strike four

Oh and having too many tickets or having an accident can (and does) lead to my last big rant

                  ILLEGAL DRUG usage

since I am a "commercial purveyor" and for the purposes of the company's insurance I can and WILL get drug tested if there is a good suspcision that I am under the influence of some (legal or illegal) substance or I am involved in an accident (my fault or not does not matter).

                  strike five

                  oooppppp to many stirkes

I like my job because for the most part I get to be by myself, manage my time accrodingly, listen to whatever music/talk/CD I want to, and minimumly interact with customers.

for the most part pizza does not talk back, give you shit, tell you what to do, or make snide comments nor does it judge you but just goes along for the ride.

sorry but my life is just not worth it nor involving other "innocent" lives.

When I worked at Smith's Medical in Keene New Hampshire, there was a Second Shift janitor who we later discovered was in the SCA. This man was as well versed as any scholar I could name on the subject of Arthurian Legends and could talk for hours on end on the myths and the facts that seem to prove that there was a Arthur and indeed a Camelot.

Would never guess it from looking at him.
“There are worlds out there where the sky is burning, where the sea's asleep and the rivers dream, people made of smoke and cities made of song. Somewhere there's danger, somewhere there's injustice and somewhere else the tea is getting cold. Come on, Ace, we've got work to do.” - Sylvester McCoy as the Seventh Doctor.

You should consider working for one of the vendors. I was an "HP" rep for a little over a year and it was a great job. Take the points of your job that you like and add in travelling around a territory in a different store every day. You talk to customers, you talk to the employees, you talk to the managers, and if they like you, you'll usually get a discount at the stores (one of my CompUSA was really good - they'd sell me anything at employee cost).

Add in the fact that on occasion you'll do trainings on the new products and be sent might even be sent to some far away land (usually in the US) for trainings (and free gifts).

My favourite retort to "Get a real job..."

What, other than this job - with a bulletproof pension and a job for life you mean?

                        Pisses them right off!

I got a speech of this nature about my library job a few years back from some guy whom I was talking to on the Internet - he was trying to convince me that I needed to go to school to become a nurse, because that was a good job with stability, and I was going to get burned-out "stacking books". (I'd tried to point out that the proper term was "shelve", and that was NOT all my job consisted of, but I'm not sure he was listening)

I'm going into Graphic Design and I still get people asking why I went into the "art" field since you know no one ever makes money at that.

When I was deciding what I wanted to do for school people kept trying to push me towards the medical field. Sorry but I don't like that kind of work. I hate hospitals and anything medical related. Besides that it's not even a sure way to find work now, despite what people may think. My boyfriend had to take a graveyard position at an unpopular hospital in order to have a steady job. I'd definitely never go into nursing, I'm not a fan of nurses (that's a whole other thing), and like half my graduating class went into nursing or some-such. By next year that market is going to be seriously flooded.

I'll stick with GD, there are actually a lot of things I can do with it and I'm not tethered to being in a specific place as much.

I figure if someone likes their work and doesn't want anything more, then that's their business, it doesn't say anything about them more than that.

See that is the problem with "This job is in demand" by the time you have the degree so will a lot of other people who were told the same thing.

I guess though I am doing it backwards I got my job in a good company that is growing and will be getting a degree applicable to moving up.
