  • I Am Mad Out of Shape

Since I was 5, I had been very active. Played soccer from 5-13 years old. Played basketball and baseball from 5-11 years old. Played football from 13-16 years old. Lifted weights for football for three years. I ran a 7 minute mile freshman year of high school (damn good for me, I'm a slow mofo). By junior year, I was able to bench 205 lbs, squat almost 500 lbs, do tons of sit ups, etc. Going out of high school, I weighed 165 lbs and I was maybe around 19-20% body fat.

Just graduated college. With no football, I had no motivation to get in the gym. I hate running. I had VERY few guy friends so I had no one to lift with (no offense ladies, but I'm not going to ask a woman who probably would have a lot of trouble with just the bar to spot me benching even my 135 lbs warm-ups [aka all my female friends]). I weigh 190-197 lbs varying from day to day. I just did sit ups for the first time in forever; managed 10 in a row. Did 20 push ups in a row before it got tough. I'm sure the drinking doesn't help nor does not having access to good food (I, for the life of me, cannot stomach most vegetables. Carrots, string beans, green beans, and sometimes broccoli are the only ones I can stomach). Though I do walk to my internship there and back twice a day which is roughly a mile total. I'm now standing for 7 hours a day so that burns some calories.

But this is embarrassing. I've grown a small chest and not the muscly kind. I went from a 32 waist to a 36. I wouldn't mind weighing 190 lbs if it was muscle but it's not. I get mad self-conscious when I put on nice shirts because it makes my chest look bigger which makes me depressed. Sometimes it gets to the point where I skip meals because it means I won't take in so many calories in the day. I've eliminated the majority of snacking by not buying crap. If I don't buy junk food, I can't eat junk food. I just can't motivate myself to really exercise which is the main thing I need to do if I want to lose weight. Cutting down on calories is great but if I don't exercise, I'm not losing calories anyway.

Happens to the best of us. Before I joined a gym, I was horrified that I measured several inches larger than I was a year ago, getting fitted for my friend's wedding.

I'm still horrified that those measurements aren't even really changing.

The only advice I can give you is to try to get out of college mode and back into good eating and good exercise habbits. Just make a little more effort every day, and you should get more ambition as time goes on.

It seems as though the minute I turned 30, I can no longer eat whatever I want whenever I want.

I've had to start watching my sugar intake. It seems to be the refined sugar and syrups that are the worst for weight gain. Extra calories in general don't seem to have as much affect. I'm not overweight, but my belly gets soft rather quickly if I have too much sugar. I'm trying to develop a taste for black coffee.

I was a skinny skater boy pre Army. I bulked up while I was in and then after not working out as intensly I started packing on the inches.

It's always hard getting back into shape. I still managed to keep running because I still enjoyed it, the hardest part for me was trying to keep at it.

However, in the first part of this calendar year I ran sporadically. Now I'm trying to go back to my old high school routine. Run every day, taking one to two days off occasionally.

Also, I'm trying to eat properly. In high school I had some of the worst dietary habits. It never caught up to me then because I ran so much that I didn't have to worry about it. It also helped that I was an active kid. Always.

That there right there bugs me. I eat properly I have since I left the Army and it hasn't helped at all.

Starting to do so more and taking the stairs instead of elevators walking the long way to places etc.

I know the exercise is part of it but I know some people that if they do one or the other there is improvement not as much as together but either helps by itself.

With me it seems like what I eat isn't a factor at all.
