Some people became class clowns because they tried every other way possible to be well liked and to get people to stop picking on them and becoming the clown was the only way out of being the dump on guy.

I don't mind the class clown when they are actually funny.

Heck, at times, I even came off as the class clown to compensate for my extreme insecurity and shyness.

Believe it or not, at work, I often get comments that I should do comedy because I have great timing and a quick wit. I can often see the funny side of a situation and I know how to break the tension when things get stressed.

The thing is, I know when a joke is warranted and when it isn't.

It's one thing when a thread gets derailed into another fairly interesting topic, but it really burns my toast when I see a really great topic from the OP derail into corny, stupid puns and jokes.
It's even worse when we get two people who think they're hilarious but they aren't, and they go back and forth feeding off each other's corniness.

The actual topic ends up buried and almost forgotten.
      Point to Ponder:

Is it considered irony when someone on an internet forum makes a post that can be considered to look like it was written by a 3rd grade dropout, and they are poking fun of the fact that another person couldn't spell?

**FYI: My comments here are as a member, not a mod. In fact, MOST of my comments on Fratch are made without my mod hat on. **

My main issue with it is when it goes ON AND ON AND ON AND ON.

A few wise cracks are always appreciated, but when it just devolves into pages and pages of nothing but puns and bad jokes, I feel like ripping my hair out.

CS is my haven for when I'm stressed. I can't tell you how annoying it is to log in and get all excited to see a hot topic in there with pages of replies, only to get so frustrated because (after I've gleefully clicked on it) I find only pages of nothing but what I mentioned above.

That's a good point. I probably should have clarified also that I was posting as a member and not a mod.

That reminds me of one of those informercials!

I figure most of the membership knows that when we're (mods and admin) are posting in these threads that we're doing so as non mods, but it doesn't hurt to bring it up again.

Yeah, I hate the pun threads too. Like Peppergirl, it just annoys me when a thread starts out interesting, but devolves into nothing but pages of stupid puns. It's hopeless trying to bring things back on topic, because everyone just wants to be silly. And rarely is it genuinely funny, it's usually just annoying.

I agree with all of you. And thanks for resurrecting this thread, Ree.

I was looking for a reference as to why I hate that so much, in another thread I described a coworker of mine who tries SO hard to be so clever and funny and insert whatever whenever in any conversation to be cheeky, and it just annoys and confuses the hell out of everyone.

In all honesty, if I make a thread on CS and come back and see a page and a half of nerd jokes or stupid puns, I just sigh and pretty much don't even want to try to put it back on track.

Not relating to puns and jokes, but to mod hats... on another board I read, moderators' posts when they speak as members look just like anyone else's (not even a label) but when they speak *as* mods they have a pink background. Draws attention to the "hey, watch it" posts for those skimming the thread, and makes it clear otherwise that they're just posting as themselves.

I'm not saying you should do it that way. It's probably not even possible with this system... but if it turns out that it is possible, it might be worth considering.

Well, from the backroom perspective, there's an attitude I like to have at the forefront of the moderation mindset - moderators are members first and moderators only when they have to be. Everyone on the moderation team should be able to enjoy and use the place as much as the membership as a whole.

I like the concept of what you say and can see the usage, but it makes the job a little more official than I'd like to see.

I think you should have a pink background; how fabulous! XD

Back on topic; I hate the endless puns. One or two is fine, but when it goes off into pages and pages... it's too much. I liken it to eating golden syrup. If you just have a couple of drops, you're cool but drinking the whole bottle in one go makes you feel sick.
