Where I work, we aren't allowed to have an weapons but company clearly states I can carry a knife up to 3in... and I do which pisses of the bosses but really they can't say anything about it except that i shouldn't use it to open boxes. The one manager doesn't see why I need to carry it other than our box cutter is lost and the other options we have for opening boxes are dull jokes that will get someone hurt.

They also fail to see that my knife is as much a weapon as a pair of scissors, pot of coffee, broom because almost EVERYTHING can be a weapon if you use it as such. I have no intention of stopping a robbery but if someone enters the store shooting I'm going to do everything in my power to kill them before they kill me. Especially when I have NO ability to open the safe as it requires a key/code that I don't have and 10 minutes to open. I'm really doubting an crackhead wanting to rob us is going to believe me. I went to school with a girl who had a sister executed because she couldn't get the safe open during robbery, so call me paranoid. Then in the past year at another local place after handing over the money another cashier still was shot for his trouble.

I hate the feeling of being completely defenseless, and screw relying on the cops as even if they are sitting outside 1 minute is plenty of time to fire several fatal shots. The police are reactionary and rarely foil a robber because they see him walk into a place, they usually show up because they sent their after the fact. Also, they mention about how my life means more than the money in the drawer, if that was the case A) I would be paid more and B) You would have off duty officers being paid to hang around the store and provide security as I'm not allowed to keep a loaded gun at the register

Honestly, I would be fine with not being allowed to defense myself if we had option B.

I had to get special approval just to have pepper spray in my vehicle.

How about a baseball bat? Large metal pipe? Schutzhund trained "service" dog?

when you say your vehicle, is it your personal vehicle or a company one?

I think I might just start parking at one of the other local businesses because at least then I can keep my 9mm in the car and they can't say shit I have to run out for it

It does seem unfair, but it's like you said - almost anything can be used as a weapon. I found it ironic that during orientation, they informed us that we're not allowed to carry pocket knives, but then proceeded to hand us all box knives It may not seem like much, but I'm pretty sure that someone is less likely to bother me if they see the box knife on me; I hardly ever use it but I like wearing it because I work late and end up walking in the parking lot in the dark at the end of shift.

An inch in the right place, a somewhat nasty nock or moderate amount of squeezing can kill basically anyone. That said, if I find myself fighting for my life I'd be much better of with a .45 than a box cutter. The box cutter is certainly better than nothing, but it's far from ideal.

my job REQUIREMENT is driving and most of the places I go are not the safest. Welcome to my world of pizza delivery. I have food in hand and a little money in my pocket. I am REQUIRED to walk into dark secluded out of the way areas with no protection or backup (and yes the company is "real concerned" about my safety), in times past I have been required to carry change for $50 and $100 for a small order (< $20) because the company wanted us to WOW the customer (simple set though for a robbery but that is NOT the company's concern just the customer satisfaction)

brass knuckles - NOPE

metal pipe/bar -- NOPE (but only if they know about it otherwise YES)

keys (that are not keys) - YES
small Leatherman type multi-tools kept on various parts of my body -- YES
various tools I leave loose on the floor board of my car --- YES
a cheap Axe/hammer combo I have hidden in my car (accessable) -- YES (what I REALLY want is a steel tomahawk but they are too expensive)

my delivery area is not all that bad but there are times, YES, I do experience fear.

OH and get this. at one of the drivers meetings, an insurance stuffed shirt once suggested that if we do not feel safe making a delivery we should ONLY call the local police and have them assist us in making the delivery. otherwise MAKE that delivery.

Yeah great advise if you are sitting nice and comfy in a nice safe office.

Yeah, I'm sure it's not an easy job and very nerve racking at times. A company I used to work for used to send me into areas of Boston and Woburn to our distributors with over $15,000 in cash to purchase computer equipment. Of course, he'd call them ahead of time to let me know I was on my way down (thank you for the secrecy).

Isn't that how they're always made? We're now seeing more and more where people are attacking employees in our competition's stores - one instance included several shots from a gun. I've been threatned when I was in retail, customers took swings at me, even "threats" from *ahem* businessmen in an Italian organization based on families..

the basic UNWRITTEN rule delivery is give them the food, money and drop your pants and bend over cause you're gonna get royally screwed.

I have NEVER understood WHY the customer is ALLOWED to get all giggy or violent with you but you are not allowed to say or do anything back. as soon as you do strike THREEE YOU'RE OUT!!!! (OH and the customer gets free stuff)

Even us security guards are not allowed to carry anything to protect ourselves. Even on my jobsite, where another guard spotted two very large coyotes!

I SOOOO wanted to say that out loud but could not casue the Area Manager was there. but most there could see I was on the verge of ROTFLMAO in this guy's face.

my responce would ahve been along the lines of "SOOOO I guess if I DO have to call the cops the comapny will not be charged a fee and this will ensure I get a BIG TIP and the store will not get an angry call from the dispatcher about wanting to waste an officer's time????"

I would have also questioned the stuffed shirt's real world experience not just him sitting in a nice safe office (most likely with an MBA diploma on the wall) and seeing insurance reports all day long. would hav adked him upfront if he ever had blisters on his feet (ground pounder or feet on the ground type thing)
