    My suggestion would be to not have "voluntary" hours at all. If people want more time, they can ask to take overtime shifts from people who don't. And people who don't want it can ask those who are more likely if they'll take it. That way, it's between the individuals whether or not one works more than the other, but the company is putting the onus on everybody evenly, which should cut off the martyrs at the proverbial knees.

    But I suspect that it would make far too much sense to ever be implemented.

      You know how it goes....if it makes sense, it's not allowed.

      My take is that they offer voluntary hours because they know there are always the same people who will take extra hours or work holidays or weekends, and that group of people generally fills up any gaps so we aren't on mandatory and all standing around talking without work to do.

      This time around, apparently, we weren't supposed to know that it was being threatened to be mandatory if not enough people volunteered, but I have my ways of making people talk.
