Take an ingredient that parents know to be commonly used in something like preserving dead bodies IE Formaldehyde, add in information that it is being used in something else add lack of paying attention in school mix well you have have hysteria serves a whole community.

Often when I see hysteria about anything like Coca Cola being able to clean batteries or Formaldehyde used in vaccines people will freak out.

Now the thing is people will freak out because in their minds commonly known chemicals have only 1 use and never can be used for anything else.

Apparently they weren't paying attention when we were taught that different chemicals react differently with other chemicals. If I were to go by their hysterical nonsense then I would avoid ever ingesting water since water makes Magnesium burn. I don't want to burn so I shouldn't drink water.

People really need to educate themselves.

A side thing is people need to improve their comprehensive reading skills. I was reading a list of things you should or shouldn't do as a parent. One of them was when you buy second hand toys to thoroughly check for recalls prior to letting your kid play with said toy.

One person's comments were that this list "telling me I have to buy brand new toys" was propaganda from the toy companies and that any mom worth their salt knows a detailed list of toy recalls. So wait she restated exactly what the article said and felt she was being brilliant in calling them out on what? Something they didn't say?

I could go on for days.....thankfully I am a rational human being and don't panic at every new "scare story"-I calmly research it and usually dismiss it as hogwash from luddites.....

Don't get me wrong. I'm all for using organic products and cleansers since ti is better for the environment. I'll use them whenever I can providing it is economical to do so. If it costs $5 more than the Johnson and Johnson product or I have to use three times as much to do the job than a chemical cleanser...

I'm going to use the Chemical product. But if the organic stuff works as well as the other stuff, I'll use it. More for the fact that some of the cleaners really fuck up my sinuses.

But like you say, I'm not going to go into flip-out city just because someone freaks out over Chemical X being in the product if Chemical X was approved by the Government as not being a significant risk to me and my health.

I avoid pesticides as much as possible. But when my son found a nest of chiggers in the yard and they tore his ass up (his feet look like I shot him with bird-shot), I went and found the strongest product meant for killing chiggers in the yard that I could find. I wasn't going to play around with sprinkling diatomatious earth. I wasn't going to dick around with Lavender and Clove oils.

No! I wanted those fuckers dead.

The damage done by that lawn spray to my family is far less than the damage those chiggers could do.

I'm all for organics whenever possible, but I'm also all for "better living through chemistry".

Reminds me of the anti smoking adds where they would say something along the lines of ciggeretts having random chemical in it which is also found in urine. As if that meant anything.

Although those were the ads that were sponsored by a tobacco company so I think they were dilibritly made really annoying and dumb to make people hate anti smokers.

Ever watch the movie fight club? You would know it is about how the evil corporations need to be taken down!..... OR if you look for closely, the main character is radical and making waves, and it is telling you to by into the establishment or else be seen as a radical who is out to destroy the order that everyone wants.

I don't think it was quite that sort of thinking. More like just making the commercials really annoying. These were the same ones with people trying to sell popsicles covered in glass or running around the street in from of tobacco companies annoying people with anti smoking facts.

Come to think of it they are like the people in high school who are really into anti drinking, smoking, sex or whatever and spend the majority of their time telling people not to do whatever it is they are against and most people can't stand them. The only people that take time to listen to their message ae ones who agree with them and the ones sitting on the fence get annoyed by their tactics and go agaainst them because of that.

and I just found a perfect example of what you're talking about

here discussing the "dangerous chemicals" found in a big mac.

such as:
Calcium carbonate? It's used as an antacid, and is the main componant of totally natural eggshells, It's also what your drinking if you have hard water.

Sodium citrate is citric acid, you know the stuff found in oranges-better stop eating those, even though they're natural. Give me a break

and as an aside-that "sodium-free" salt for people with heart/blood pressure problems....yeah potassium chloride as opposed to sodium chloride-potassium chloride is the chemical used for lethal injection.....also known in fertilizer as muriate of potash

Yeah, those commercials are so pointless. If you really want people to quit smoking, put a commercial showing the average daily life of someone with terminal lung cancer.
That is why I never will pick up a cigarette, because I saw my grandpa die of lung cancer and I don't want to take even the slightest chance of going through that myself.

As far as the people who freak out over chemicals, if you really want to mindfuck them tell them to pick up a bottle of cough suppressent, or pain reliever, or... well almost any over the counter pharmasutical... I guarantee you that most of them will include HCL in the ingredients list, which, by the way, is the basis of hydrocloric acid... oh noes We're all taking acid as medicine (even though it is so diluted that it is probably less acidic than your own saliva, just watch people freak out).
