  • Finding Employeement/ my parents

I have noticed we have had a thread on Applications, I just did one about the interview process.

Now I figure the next logcial vent is the whole finding employment which is nice since lately I have seen a significant increase in the number of job postings for my field especially ones geared more towards entry level positions for recent college grades (me).

My parents are sick of me bitching that I hate my job and want me to get a new one. My dad complains I'm just coming up with excuses not to do any work. First off, I work at a gas station right now making shit wages recently managed to get off 3rd shift so for the most part I'm sleeping at night and now feel things improving in my life because I'm not beng dicked around as much at work and when I ask for a day off, and they give it to me off I actually have it off, and not being forced to work the overnight leading into that day.

I applied several months ago at major package handling place at request of my now ex's father, they recently got in touch with me. $11hr, sounds good till I just got done driving out for an interview and actually started to consider it.

    Pros
    $11 hr
$2000yr tuition assistance (that I'm trying to figure out when I would have time to use being 3rd shift and if I keep my first job)
    Cons
3rd shift - what I hate about my last job
50 min+ commute for 3-5hrs of work, which can be 1.5-2X longer in winter
Takes me through bad area of big city where I managed to notice several prostitutes and one drug dealer, between the drive in and back. And the company I'm applying for has signs posted before you even enter the parking lot that weapons are completely banned, so I can't carry while in bad part of town and leave it in my car at work which would be acceptable to me.
    ---------------------
My dad is also pushing for me to take an upcoming police entrance exam, and I really have no interesting in applying for a department who just got done laying officers off, and might do it again. Along with the fact, I have no interest in going into law enforcement and if I did just because for starting out they don't pay to bad, especially when my dad compares it to what I make now. However, both my parents are always worried about egg on their face or friends of theirs if they vouch for us. I'm wondering how bad it would look for my father if the second I get offered an IT job that I been waiting for I quit the force.

Am I just being picky or are these legitimate concerns? I mean I have an idea of hte job I want, I just don't know where it is actually randomly found a book at library about finding and obtaining tech employement so I'm hoping that will help since for the past year I have had no luck, mainly because my "excuse" is I was working fulltime and shit hours that made setting up interviews impossible.

Also, I turned down jobs that sounded horrible and I knew I wouldn't be happy like a cable installer job that paid well but required 10-12hr work days SIX days a week, I know many people have no problem working that much but I do. However, I can spend hours working on computers and not even notice it or have it be a problem and I have fun doing it. Which is why I want that sort of job.

Weapons might be banned in the parking lot, but I bet it doesn't say anything about five pound dumbells you could clock somebody with if they tried to get into your car with you.
