  • People who apparently don't read replies before posting their own

This isn't a major hate of mine. More of a minor pet peeve. I don't even know why it bothers me as much as it does. Maybe somebody can fill me in on why people do this.

Say there's a thread where a person asks a fairly simple question. Like, "Where do I go to complete quest# 100?" on a gaming thread. Simple question, simple answer. Someone replies and tells them the correct answer.

Why do other people feel the need to reply, hours later, with the exact same thing that the first person who replied did?

On another forum I go to, there are tons of threads that go like this:

"I'm playing <insert name of game here> and I'm stuck in <name of town.> What do I do next?"

"There's a dungeon north of that town you need to go to."

"The next dungeon you need to go to is north."

"Go north to the next dungeon."

And the second and third responses will be...hours after the first one. So it's not like they were all responding at the same time. Do people just not read the whole thread? I don't get it. Why bother replying at all if you're giving the exact same info that's already been given?

That I have noticed quite abit. It bothers me. I will only reply to those, if I didn't know it and tell them thanks for that info. Or something like that.

Something that blatant, sure... I thought at first you meant something more along the lines of the sort of discussion that goes on here, where someone might well come into a long thread and say something that was covered somewhere in the middle without realizing it.

(And I *have* replied, from my point of view, at the same time as someone else, though it was really long after, sometimes by many hours. Comes from opening multiple windows/tabs at once... for instance, rather than reading a thread, going back to the topic list, picking a different one, etc., I'll go down the list command-clicking all the ones that look interesting first, then close the tabs as I read them. Same with search results, etc. If I have or want to do something else, and then wind up coming back to it later, it's easy to forget the need to reload before posting.)

Yeah, that I can understand. There are a lot of threads on Fratching, in particular, that get pretty big pretty fast, and I don't necessarily read every post, or I might just skim them briefly.

I always feel stupid when I post a reply only to realize later I thought I was on the last page when I wasn't

I've done that before; I usually go back and edit my reply so no-one knows of my doofusness. XD

or people that reply without having read the entire OP

there was a thread on CS where the OP was talking about a hassle from their bank while trying to cash her first "live check" before their direct deposit kicked in. One of the responses was "you should just sign up for direct deposit"
