Crap like that is on of the reasons I got out of online gaming back in the mid 90s (Yep..Showing my age)

I used to game pretty heavy into MUDs (Around school and work), and made it to what was then called a immortal on one mud (Basically highest level a player could get) before they changed the rules. After the rule change I was no long "immortal, and now found myself a mid level player instead of a top level). They also changed the dynamics of the mud to allow "player killing" (before it didn't) . What followed after that was a giant cluster f$#K. Basically the only people that could do anything after that was a group of "10 - 15 year olds" who did nothing but mud all day. The Mid ended up with the group of kids were able to shoot up to a higher level very quickly, and just went around and beat the crap out of anyone to prevent them from reaching the same level they were until their victims got tired left the game.

People like that is why I quit WOW, but I play Eve online, its thankfully not as bad with the asshats, as you can just stop watching local chat , and I have a corporation that doesn't tolerate asshattery (love that word.)

My husband and I both quit WoW due to factors such as the ones you describe. People were just way too involved in being the best and figuring out the "perfect" build with the "perfect" gear that had the "perfect" stats. My husband and I both started playing during vanilla (we actually first met through the game ) and we both really enjoyed the atmosphere. We had ups and downs throughout the 2 xpacs, and eventually we both just got fed up with where the game was heading and the types of people we kept meeting. We couldn't find the right guild for us. We did for a while, but then it imploded. We just wanted a casual experience and wanted to share that with like-minded people. We wanted the option to do guild runs for dungeons and raids, but not have it take over. But it always seemed that when we thought we found something perfect, it would change and people would start turning into green-eyed monsters who couldn't get enough purples. We went through at least 3 different guilds over the years where that happened. The last time it happened, it took the fun out of it for both of us for good. And right after we had gotten our 310% flying mounts from doing that damned year-long achievement for the holiday collection. Bah

I have to admit that I was one of those folks of whom you all speak. I never called anyone names, nor did I ever look down on folks that liked to play casually. What made the game fascinating to me, though, was mechanics.

That's really what makes WOW like crack to so many folks. There's something for everyone. If you like getting achievements, you can spend all your time doing that. If you like getting mounts you can do that. If you like raiding and mechanics, you can do that.

I did, however find that I spent a little too much time playing and not enough time doing important stuff. I didn't really come to grips with this until I lost my Authenticator. It wasn't a big, OMG! I can't play moment when I lost it, I was just like, "well, I'll find it within the week...I know it is in the house somewhere."

Well, the week turned into two, and I found that I really didn't miss playing the game all that much. I miss some of the people, but, meh. I'm done with that game and actually a lot happier for it. It's funny how pixels on a screen can become the object of an obsession without even realizing it.

My oldest son is several states away at school and the only time we can actually spend together is at Christmas. So I talked him into playing Rainbow Six. Some of his buddys join in and we have a blast. They won an academy RB6 tournment while I watched on line. What made me proud was when someone made a comment on a move they did, my son said "Yeah we learned that one from my Dad." Maybe the old man still has something to teach him.

I don't play WOW and never have but I've heard from several that quit because of the reasons listed. This thread reminds me of that South Park episode.
