I’m going to start off by saying I’m not a complete teetotaler. I do occasionally imbibe in alcohol, but I can count on one hand the number of times I year I have a drink, usually. That said, this happened at a local grocery store, and rather than post it in sightings, I felt it safer to put here.
I had stopped in to buy 3 things, one of which was a bottle of root beer. The guy in front of me, old enough to be my father, mind you had a six pack of miller light as part of his purchase. He looks at my stuff, then asks,
“Now why would you drink ROOT beer when you can drink REAL beer?”
I have a lot of issues with beer, stemming from growing up with an alcoholic father, whose drink of choice is beer. I can’t even stand the smell of it, it makes me sick to my stomach. I didn’t go into detail on that, I just gave him a Look that told him it was none of his business and replied that I don’t drink alcohol.
His reply?
“Oh. You must not be ANY fun, huh?”
Why would I require alcohol to be fun? Really? I’m so sorry that I’m dull because I don’t drink often! It just really irks me to hear this attitude shared around. I get it from various CWs, and now a complete stranger? It bugs me. A lot. I’m not going to preach to you about why you SHOULDN’T drink, so why are you telling me that my character is lacking something because I choose not to drink often? Apparently that makes me dull to be around. Fine, whatever.
The attitude just annoys me, and I had to get this off my chest. I have my beliefs about drinking. I watched my grandfather stay sober as a recovered alcoholic, (He was sober about 35-40 years before he died) and I grew up with a father who couldn’t even function in the morning until he had a beer, his hands would shake so bad. I don’t want to follow that path, so I limit what I drink. And I never drink beer. Ever. Is it silly that the mere smell of it makes me ill? Probably.
Am I blowing a complete stranger’s comment out of proportion? Again, probably. Whatever. Just one of those little things I hate, the implication that if you choose not to get soused on a regular basis, you’re just not any fun.
The end.
