I hate when people say "kk"

    I hate when people say "kk"

    The texting thread got me thinking about this.I don't know why the hell this bothers me; but if I'm talking on AIM or something I hate when people tell me "kk." I'm probably one of the only people who still spells out "you;" and I can let a lot of stuff slide.

    But to me; if someone says "kk" it's kinda like saying "Okay, okay, I get it, now shut up" or something. I don't know, I just think it's rude. So can anyone tell me what THEY think it means so I don't get all upset next time some asshole says it (when they most likely don't mean to)?

    Interesting that you view it that way. When I see someone type "kk", I hear it in my head as a cutesy, chipper way of saying "ok", rather than a rushed "ok, ok already".

    Er... I hope you get what I mean about hearing it in my head. I'm not quite sure I get it myself.

      I hear it more the way Norton mentioned, but it still annoys me. Some abbreviations, I don't care if people use them. BRB is fine with me. Sometimes you are in a rush and you don't want someone to think you are ignoring them. But wen u spek lik dis, then I start to get pretty annoyed.

        I hate that also. When I am chatting with someone on IM's or anything. I want a normal conversation. Not play a guessing game on what they are trying to say.

          I read it the same way that Giggle Goose does, and I think it's stupid and annoying. "OK" in itself is already an abbreviation of "Okay". I sit there trying to figure out where the extra k comes from

              I haven't heard "KK" used before, now....

                Um, guilty? But in my defence, it is me simply saying okay. (I grew up on MUDS, and "k" was a command to kick, so I see it as someone trying to kick something)

                  I talk with people who pretty much spell out all their words. The girlfriend doesn't ocassionaly. Everyone does. I couldn't even figure out how to abbreviate all my words, it'd be too hard.

                  "kk" doesn't bother me. There's not a lot that bothers me. I actually hate it more when people add letters to words that don't need them. Every hear anyone say "anyways" that drives me up a wall.

                    I'm certainly guilty of a little text type.. type text speech, wait, what was it called again? Um, anyway, only times I can recall using "brb" or "kk" was when I really have to dash. I mean, I'd rather not type out "be right back" if I notice my cat's about to cough up a hairball. Likewise, if whomever I'm chatting with has to dissapear a moment, I tend to just type "kk" in response (since I figure they've dissapeared as quickly as I would have, anyway).

                    Any other use of shorthand (like "lol") has been retooled to activate smilies, now, anyway.

                      About six years back, I was trying to IM a friend of mine in a hurry and I hit the k key twice accidently instead of typing ok. Ever since then I've used kk as an inside joke, because I thought it was funny. Apparently it's used in other circles as well, but I couldn't tell you why.

                        The whole abbrevation thing itself bugs me. Don't get me wrong, I abbreviate a few words here and there, like sometimes I'll type "nite" instead of "night", "thru" instead of "thru", and if I'm chatting, I'll sometimes use "BRB", "LOL", or even "k." Nothing wrong with using it sparingly.

                        But when every other word is abbreviated, it makes it hard to read, and some abbreviations might not be clear. For example, some people might not be able to figure out what "IDK" means.

                          I sort of agree, TBH

                          IMHO, 'kk' is good if you just need a quick, unthought about acknowledgement.. as in "brb".."kk" to say yeah - no probs.

                          It doesn't, to me, mean agreement like 'OK' does or can, only that I'm still following you, please continue, or that I've got your last msg.

                          Speed-wise - kk is a lot faster than ok (well - for me).

                          So..TTFM


                          (ok - I didn't have to use all those abbreviations, but ... well.....ok - maybe I did )

                          But I do also agree - in normal flowing conversation, don't make me try to translate...<sigh>

                          BTW - I spell out 'you' as well... and 'through' (none of this 'thru' stuff!!)

                            Well, if the idea is to save time and keystrokes, I don't get why a person can't just hit "ok" as it has been used for a very long time. The "o" is right above the "k" anyway.

                            That's my biggest peeve about shorthand. I can understand the "BRB', "LOL", etc., but there are all these annoying little abbreviations that are using exactly the same number of keystrokes, so why not just spell it properly to begin with?
                            Point to Ponder:

                            Is it considered irony when someone on an internet forum makes a post that can be considered to look like it was written by a 3rd grade dropout, and they are poking fun of the fact that another person couldn't spell?

                              How about the fact that you can tell whether someone started abbreviating on MUDs and IRC, or started with texting, by whether they use <3 as a shorthand symbol?

                              (texters use it as a heart...but to old schoolers, it's got a very different meaning...it's an e-moon).
