  • Stupid myths....

There are some "myths" that IMO can't be true because of what I call "the whistle blower factor."

Examples: Lottery winners are really actors that are paid to hold the big check. Antivirus makers are the ones that make the viruses. Football games are fixed with predetermined winners.

If these were true, someone would have blown the whistle a long time ago.

    Faking the moon landing?

The FDR administration knew all the details about Pearl Harbor and let it happen anyway so we could go to war?

The Bush Administration knew the details of 9/11 and let it happen anyway so we could go to war?

Those are some of my favorites.

Aye. I get similar things from people claiming to know obscure rules and laws. At my old store we had this stamp we put on checks that said "If this check bounces I authorize my account to be debited an appropriate fee". Some people were like "That's illegal! I know! It violates my rights under the Heinerman Law of 1816!" Or my favorite: "That ticket the cop gave me is illegal because he wasn't wearing his hat straight!"

And I just want to say "WOW. You're saying the corporation doesn't know about this law, the cops and judges and DA don't know about this law, all the lawyers in the world don't know about this law, but YOU know about it. Awesome."

Sometimes I tend to believe all reality shows are fixed. My wife and I watch biggest loser, and sometimes I think they're all reading from a script. Same with AGT. I feel like they've all got scripts in front of them.

Then I realize how stupid that is...why spend millions of dollars writing for people like Howie and Piers when they could just as easily let them do their own thing with minimal guidance?

I've found I can reasonably judge a person's intelligence by the dumb urban legends they believe in. Snopes is my new IQ test. "KFC is made with mutant chickens!" You didn't even get your name right on the SAT's did you?

        .
I've never heard any good evidence for this one..lol...it's usually like "OMG...some important person was on a plane the DAY BEFORE IT HAPPENED!" or "DICK CHENEY CANCELLED HIS FLIGHT THAT DAY!" "BUSH WAS SEEN SHAKING HANDS WITH MUSLIMS THAT DAY!"

So these people are basically saying that the government masterminded this wonderful scheme to attack America, get it blamed on someone else, start a war and do all this devious stuff...and yet they made dumb mistakes like that? I don't think so.

The lottery one really gets me. The odds for the mega millions or powerball may be next to impossible, but when you factor in the number of tickets sold, chances are, someone will eventually win. Just because you don't win doesn't mean the game is rigged.

Exactly. The people who say the winners are really actors fail to take into account that the news outlets will many times do a story on a winner a year later to show how he/she is living the good life (or crappy life in the case of some).

The only evidence about pearl harbor I've ever actually been shown proves only that they had reason to believe that Japan would attack the U.S. eventually. No indication of when or where, just that it might happen.

Which, if you think about it, goes without saying. Problem being that it's nowhere near enough to be able to do anything about it.

There was evidence that Hitler wanted the US to eventually get involved in the war, and that was enough to suggest that someone involved with the Axis would get the US involved.

Yeah, but they make the best entertainment, especially when their theories (for lack of a better term. delusional paranoia maybe?) are easily countered and they either dismiss the proof that discredits them or come up with new bullshit explanations to explain it.

A personal favorite is the super thermite one for why the North tower collapsed. Their "proof" behind it? They found on some chunks of rocks traces of aluminum and iron oxide and videos of thermite reactions occurring. When countered with the concept that an ALUMINUM FRAMED plane hitting an IRON supported building and burning at an excessive temperature would make a hell of a lot more sense, they simply say that it proves nothing.

I have one coworker in particular, you can never sway from political gabble, no matter how hard you try. He is always going on and on about the government.

You're quite right, it's so entertaining. But I often wonder, even question, the mental health of people who are so adament about our government and these crazy conspiracy theories.

Ugh, my dad is a conspiracy theory nut (he firmly believes Obama is a Muslim who is not an American citizen), but in his case, it's a combination of age and alcohol slowly melting his brain away. Mostly the alcohol.

My dad is a birther who believes The Obama Diaries is a true story.

I like Laura Ingraham and really don't care for raving narcissist Obama and his sickening wife, but I don't take things that far. That's too out there.

He didn't know the target however or that it would be so deadly.

Pretty much this. The government at that time new Japan wanted to attack us. They had no idea it would be Pearl Harbor though.
