Tipping delivery drivers using their own vehicles

I'm not a traveler, so I can't actually name any, but how do THOSE places stay in business when American companies claim they could not?

It's just a cultural difference. Restaurant owners there pay their staff living wages because they know that the staff will not receive enough in tips to make up the difference, as it is not the norm to receive tips. Whereas restaurant owners in the states have so embraced the idea of paying so little for their staff that they are unlikely to change it any time soon.

How do they keep in business? Anwer is fairly simple. Their employees are not only paid more, but prices are also much higher then America to make it up. Getting a steak here for say 10 bucks, would be 25 bucks there.

That and tipping them is an insult. It's basically saying here ya go, I'm paying you to do your job" like a parent to a little child.

I never got why so many people are so against electric vehicles. From what I can tell, people are just pissed it cannot go 100 mph.

The Chevy Volt can go 100 MPH on pure electric power. Of course if you go that fast you won't get the 40 mile range, probably much less. In my town it seems that most drive full-size pickup trucks, quite a few lifted. Drivers of those might be opposed to smaller electric vehicles.

The local pizza place knows us to be good tippers (mom was both a chef and waitress and understands tipping better than a lot of people in this town). In a few cases our order is delivered ahead of the original estimate and we tip well for that, especially if we know it "should have" taken longer due to the rush.

Sure, pay the ten dollars an hour. Now place closes because cannot afford to pay the drivers their money. Just isn't making the money for it.

Now employee loses said job, and makes zero money.

Where as before, while horrible pay, can at least have long term commitment.

That's just not right...

I love when people stiff or tip really little, using "Well, their employer should PAY THEM MORE!" as their leverage.

I don't like that drivers--or indeed waiters-- are forced to risk their paycheck on the whims of customers who far too often are ignorant or just cheap.

What about here in Canada? I don't know about the rest of the provinces, but BC pays at least minimum wage ($8/h, or well, training wage which is $6/h if you're under a certain number of hours of total work experience.). Some places that are traditionally considered tipped jobs pay even more than that sometimes over $10/h and while yes, our food is a bit more expensive it's not nearly the price difference between $10 and $25. It's maybe $5 at the most, usually less. Yet Tipping is still expected here too, even when employees make a half decent wage. There is the same attitude towards it as there is in the states. That doesn't even take into account the fact that ALL of the other provinces have higher minimum wage than BC.

My example was for places of business where the culture considers tipping rude. They don't need tips, because of the higher pay rate, and they get the higher pay rate because their /tip/ if you would, is already added per item. Say for example Steak again. Here it's ten dollar meal. Two dollar tip would be decent. The steak there would be much more. Because the two tip is added to the ten, but they add more so that the waiter gets tipped, the cook gets tipped, the washer gets tipped, the owner gets tipped etc. Add all those tips, and you get the higher cost of food.

Basically, in cultures where its rude to leave tips, it's because the tip they'd /earn/ is already factored into the price.

I don't really see a difference if they are getting paid a living wage (and $12/h is a living wage, heck I've lived on $8/h before). This is my argument when it comes to tipping here, because servers are paid a decent wage and unlike delivery drivers they don't have to use their own car for work, yet it's still considered "rude" not to tip. I'm sorry, but someone making $10 or so an hour doesn't need tips. They may be nice, but you don't need them to live. Nor is serving the hardest job out there, other jobs are just as difficult without the added bonus of a tip.

Thing is if I want to go to a restaurant regularly I'm pretty much obligated to because the staff thinks it's okay to give crappy service because they think they need their bonus wages.

Not all. My uncle was chef at a restraunt. They'd get rid of people that did that.

Yeah, people do bitch about not getting tips and how they go slower or something, but not all waiters do that.

Lots of people hate customers, doesn't mean we all go out of our way to make their life hell.

Do waiters abuse their positon and treat people like crap because they didn't get tips? Sure. But not all. Far more people just grin and bare it, and come here to vent and rage about it.
