You may be surprised here, but I totally agree with you.

I'm not sure if we're both thinking of the same thread here or if this sprouts from CS or not, but I have a specific story in mind here.......and I can't even read the updates anymore after so many people jumped in with "You should sue the old lady!".......did anyone read that this story is old, in the past, already done with the court systems?

That reminds me of this girl on another forum. She was a total sympathy junkie; she kept on posting threads proclaiming that she'd suffered various disasters, from rape to her home being hit by a tornado, and lapping up the sympathy that poured in. She came unstuck when she faked her own death; she registered a new account and posted that she'd died on the forum, pretending to be her husband. She kept it up for a while then ballsed up when she accidentally came into the chat room on her old account. People confronted her and she eventually was forced to admit the truth; namely, that she'd faked her death and that all the previous disasters were all made up. She was run off the forum cuz people were so disgusted with her.

While this drives me absolutely batty too, my beef is far more with the people who indulge the OP in these situations. Yes, what the OP did was pretty despicable, but that's one person. In the example I'm thinking of, at least ten other people have ignored all the signs of the OP being full of bullshit. Why? Because people are so ready to indulge in some hate that they will ignore the complete lack of logic and sense to a story, just so that they can rant against the evils that seem to have befallen the OP.

Herd mentality turns decent people into frothing anger-suckers. It makes me sad.

I knew someone like that. She always claimed that she'd been abused by her father. She claimed she had a probably terminal illness. Sympathy hog, and always stirring up drama too.

I used to just dislike her. Then I found out that everything she said was actually true... About another member of the forum, who didn't raise the issue because she didn't want to cause drama.

Now I never talk to the first girl. But the second is a close friend of mine, and a big influence in my life.

I always thought that something wasn't quite right about her stories, and I wasn't the only one, either. However, we hesitated to just confront her on the forum cuz we didn't want to start a flame war. We were about to PM the admin when she faked her death.

It's the faking death thing that bugs me. Um, why? O.o
