  • I Am Not Letting Myself "Go"

So it's almost Christmas time, and my family has requested my "list".

As most people do as they get older, my tastes and style have changed. Ever since joining a gym, stopping smoking and attempting to eat healthier, also in recent years, I've gotten a lot more comfortable with the way I look naturally, and would rather be comfy than flashy, especially at work or in places it really doesn't matter.

I requested for Christmas some althletic pants (yes, sweats, but I call them athletic pants) and those sporty fleeces and looser fitting tees for work. I am getting tired of wearing jeans every night, having to sit/stand for several hours in tight jeans (it's the only way I can wear them because of my body shape and my leg shape, some of it is because I've gained weight and I don't want to buy bigger sizes because I am slowly losing it). If I wear loose jeans, I look like I shit my pants and I have short stumpy legs. I would rather wear tight yet comfy althetic pants for 8-12 hours instead, and have more looser fitting tees. They feel so nice. And fleece is just awesome.

My mom saw that and yelled that I would be "letting myself go", and she went on about how women who suddenly go from being always made up and flashy to casual usually stop caring about themselves.

    Uh. No.

I just want to be comfy at work, and would rather have a more athletic, sporty persona. I have been developing a more athletic looking body since working out and weight lifting, and I'd like to wear the proper clothes that go with it. Plus, there are lots of women my age who rock the Sporty Spice look and still have nice hair, makeup on, and great hygene.

I will never stop caring about the way I look and I will never become someone who stops caring about my health or hygene just because I no longer want to wear super tight jeans and tight shirts and lots of makeup. I quit wearing a lot of makeup to work because it wasn't worth it.

It's also liberating and great to me, to be able to be comfortable with how I look without makeup to run errands. Unless I'm going out to dinner or a nice shopping outing or going to a show or out with friends, I keep it pretty casual. A lot of times, I go to the bank or the drug store fresh from the gym. I don't smell or look bad at all, in my opinion. I have met up with my mom for a casual lunch without makeup and she's flipped on me and asked if I was hungover or sick.

This comes from a woman who has only worn makeup and fancier clothes for only the past few years, because only later in life did she begin to want to vamp herself up.

I even tried to assure her that I will always be a Barbie girl, will still have low cut and tight and sparkly tops and wear makeup and do my hair pretty, will always take advantage of my days off by wearing my nicer clothes, but it's just part of me growing up and wanting to change my style a bit.

I can't believe something so small would set someone off into an assumption that I'd become a bag lady or a bum.

Man, that's kinda harsh of your mom to flip on you over something so trivial as makeup. I mean, seriously, no one really NEEDS makeup. It looks nice and makes women feel better about their looks, but it's not necessary for survival.

I work from home so I hardly ever worry about what I wear...usually wind pants and a t-shirt at home. When we go out to dinner once or twice a week, though, I like to dress up since it's one of the few times when I get to go out. So, I'm largely in the same situation as you...just 'cuz I don't normally wear nice clothes (why should I when I'm at home, no one will ever see me) doesn't mean I let myself go and look like a slob when I do go out. Even when I was at my last job, if I was working in the warehouse, I wouldn't worry about what I wore too much. No holes? Not dirty? Not some ungodly color that's going to blind everyone else? Good enough for me. It's going to get sweaty and dusty anyway.

I say major props to you, blas, for being comfortable enough with yourself and your looks to not obsess over them, especially when your family is giving you grief about it.

"mom it's work, in a nasty dirty warehouse/factory, I don't like ruining my nice/expensive clothes there"

wonder what she'd say about me, I wear scrubs at work, because I don't want to ruin my nice clothes at work(yes it's a lab but we get to wear street clothes and a labcoat)

WTF? That's ridiculous, blas. I know where you're coming from though; my Mom is one of those people who never leaves the house without makeup, and she's *always* on my case about it. Whatever, I do. not. care. I have pretty decent skin, and I'm fine with going out with no makeup or just concealer and powder.

Another female GTA in the department is always put together, nice clothes, fixed hair, makeup, etc. I just can't see going to that level of detail for class. And HELL NO I am not wearing heels, there are wayyy too many stairs on campus for that to be conceivable.

I'll never give up the heels and the nice hair and full on makeup, but that's for weekends and play and fun time.

I find it odd that my mom hasn't worn makeup until recent years and doesn't even wear that much or every single day, and she's worried because I want to wear sweats to work that I'm going to become one of those homely slobs who goes everywhere in their PJs with mussy dirty hair and unwashed.

I dunno I just don't dress up ever. I wear what is passable for work...which is basically comfortable pants, shirts and shoes. Same thing on the weekend...although I will opt for shorts or sweats depending on weather. I don't do heels ever.....I already have issues with my feet hurting and now I have to take extra special care of them.

Blas...what you are doing sounds fine and makes perfect sense to me....so I dunno.
