  • Getting Yelled at by the boss for doing my F*&#king Job!

This is a rant, I've again found something that's not going dislodge itself from my brain voluntarily.

So I'm at work today, and these two girls come into the shop. New customers, never been in the store before so of course they have questions. Same questions I answer 50 times a day. They ask about some jewelry, and in particular a replica of a victorian necklace. It's a little more than they have on them, so they ask me if we can hold the necklace until later that day. No problem, we can hold an item for 24-hours without a deposit. So they ask if there is a Wells Fargo near-by where they can withdraw some money. No problem, there's one right up the block. So they leave with a promise to come back and get the necklace shortly.

After they walk out, my boss comes out and says "Are we clear?", and I say Yes. Then she says "WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT!?!". I'm a little taken aback so I asked "What?" She says "THOSE TWO GIRLS WHO WERE IN HERE FOR 2 HOURS AND DIDN'T BUY ANYTHING! THEY TALKED WITH EVERY EMPLOYEE AND JUST KEPT MOVING ON TO THE NEXT ONE!" Well, this is an exaggeration, the shop hadn't even been OPEN for 2 hours as of the time they left. The two young ladies spent perhaps 45 minutes to 1 hour looking around, asking questions, and shopping. So I tell the boss "You need to calm down, they just went to the Bank to withdraw some money to buy a necklack they want." The boss says "I DON'T CARE, I DON'T HAVE TIME TO DEAL WITH THIS SHIT!"

Excuse me? Did I miss something? SHE doesn't have time to deal with customers? I'm the one who was helping them, answering all their questions about the merchandise, and telling them about the classes the shop offers for things they were interested in! It's MY time not HERS, and I'm providing good customer service AND working to make a sale! And for this I get yelled at? WTF?!

So the boss stomps off into the back room, and fortunately was no where to be seen when the girls came back, with money in hand and buy the necklace LIKE THEY FREAKIN' SAID THEY WOULD!

Then a few hours later, a guy wants to buy a dragon figurine. So I get it out of the display case and go to find it's box. I check all the usual spots, no box. One of the guys come out and tells me to check all the usual spots. Yeah, thanks a heap, I already checked those places. Then the boss comes out and tells me to check the same places. So I hand them the figurine and say "Ya' know what? You all know where the box is, be my guests, you handle it." Meanwhile the poor guy is standing there at the register waiting. So I happen to look up and I see the boxes on the top of the display case the dragon was in. I go get it, I ring the guy up and apologize for the wait.

Then the boss comes up and says "So the guy couldn't wait for the box, what an asshole!" I say No, I found the another figurine in a box ready to go and I just finished ringing him out. The boss says "WHAT?! WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL US SO WE COULD STOP LOOKING FOR IT!", and then she stomps off to the back room. Snaps at another employee and the next thing I know she's walking out the door talking about how she might as well go home because she's always wrong...... Really? No kidding? How old are you? 3-years-old? When yer wrong, accept it, admit it, and learn from it. You don't throw a trantrum, you don't yell as the employees for doing their jobs and you certainly don't yell at them for making a sale!

I can understand if all she saw was the two girls talking and looking around being annoyed at the waste of time. But as soon as I said "Yer wrong, they're just going to get some cash and they'll be back to buy the necklace," she should've calmed down. She was pissed because of a false impression of the situation and when she realized her impression was totally wrong, she should've apologized for blowing her top. Oh and I'm suppose to make another customer wait even longer to yell out "You can stop looking for the box, I found it!" across the sales floor just to save them 5 minutes. Yeah, screw you, I don't think that's professional behaviour. Neither is having a damn tantrum on the sales floor over it!

    Rant over.

I'm sorry you had to deal with that, at least she left for a while maybe to cool off.

Whatever her problem is, it is not your fault and that as you said was not only unprofessional but very childish. Plus why stop looking since there still is a missing box for the dragon figurine when all you did was sell one that was already boxed and ready to go. Wow. Yeah still doesn't solve the issue of where the box is, just solved the problem of keeping a customer waiting.

Its ok to be wrong...forgive me...but was it a bad day for your boss or...something else?
Repeat after me, "I'm over it"
    Yeah we're so over, over

Yeah I hate that. Back when I was working at walmart. My only job there was to gather carts. My coworker who I was taking home and I decided to look on the side of the building to see about how many carts we would have to gather from it, seeing as we both had forgotten about it that day. Plus there was an exit on that side of the parking lot. Next day we went in and we got yelled at about it.

Hm. I've dealt with alot of bad managers, and I know that inpatient feeling she had when customers wander around, and don't want to buy anything and just wasting time.

But I don't ever express it. With her tantrum, something else is going on unless she's always like this.

I'm reminded of a south park with the douche and turd. The lesson being that frequently, the people who get ahead into management positions got there from sucking up, kissing ass, and screwing people over.

Yeah, I know not EVERYONE got there that way. But a lot did.

I know the boss (aka one of the store Owners) is having problems at home. The economy is still crappy, we're all stressed over paying bills. She'd kept hoping that the store would be doing well enough by now that she could retire and leave the day-to-day managing of the shop to the rest of us.....<sigh> But yeah, in a way she's been like this for the last couple of years, and it's only getting worse. There are times when it seems like she just wishes people would come in, get exactly what they need, not talk to any one, fork over their money, and leave. It's like she hates all our customers (and in fact is constantly going on about how they are all idiots and morons and where did all the intelligent customers go?....Gee, I wonder? When the owner/head-manager is always going off on a tirade on the sales floor, who would want to come back?) and knows that she NEEDS them to come in and buy things in order to pay the bills.

Sometimes I swear that she's not happy unless she's pissed off and complaining about something
