  • People doing shit they know will kill them in the long run.

    /rant

Based off of a recent PFB 'letter' where a 'diabetic' claimed McD's screwed up her order of a 'wrap and shake'.

I was (recently) diagnosed as a type 2 back in August; my own fault, i was eating crap, and drinking a hell of a lot of soda instead of considering healthy food.

Since then, I've been working to lose weight, eat healthily, and, on rare occasions, I will have/sneak something sweet, such as a few mints, or a single chocolate bar, once or twice a Month.

I have NO IDEA why people get flat-out told 'Do not continue eating like you used to, unless you want a long, painful, and lingering death as pieces of you die' and disregard it entirely, often saying crap like 'oh, I can't have sugars, so gimme four cheeseburgers and a large diet coke.'

And, as shown in recent 'posts' on PFB, some people use the 'But I'm diabetic' as the new race card. What. The. FUCK. Is wrong with those retards?

    /rant

Anyone have any input, want to discuss things, or have some recipies for good food with a Low carb count? I kinda want to eat something that doesn't push 50+ carbs per meal.

I'm a tad ignorant and didn't know this until recently, but there are people are food addicts. Like smokers/drinkers/drug addicts, they simply can't stop eating or obsessing about food.

Not that it excuses the unhealthy eating or damage they may be doing to themselves, but some people actually have a food addiction. It may not always be bad food, but some people are always thinking about food, obsessing over what they'll eat next, over-eating because it feels good, whatever have you.

I'm a carbo-holic, but I tend to eat a lot of tuna and salmon, which is very low in carbs and very high in lean protein. Protein is essential if you are going to be losing weight by exercising.

My grandma is sorta like the people the OP mentioned. She was diagnosed with type 2 a few years ago. She keeps hard candies and such in her purse (not the sugar free kinds) as her "snack" in case she goes too long without food. She also eats a ton of fruit. From what I know of diabetics, candy is not the ideal snack food. It is good to have something sugary on hand in case of emergencies where your blood sugar drops way too low, but that's not the case with my grandma; she eats candy regularly and in lieu of actual food. As for fruit, she thinks that because it's natural it's okay for her to eat however much she wants. Fruit is good for you, but it's also full of sugar, which she gets too much of as it is so she should be limiting her intake, but she doesn't monitor it at all because fruit is health food.

If diet were a single, one-time choice, it would be easy. But it's not: it's a continual stream of tiny choices, any one of which, by itself, does no significant harm or good. (within reasonable limits, of course, such as not having a bowl of ant poison for breakfast.)

Having, say, a plain salad for *today's* lunch will not, by itself, make any difference in my long-term health. Neither will having chicken fingers and fries. So it's easy to eat the tasty chicken fingers and say I'll behave tomorrow... and so on indefinitely.

Thanks, by the way... I wasn't hungry (or more accurately given the time and when I last ate, hadn't *noticed* that I was hungry) until this thread, and now I'm craving Zaxby's

I have a similar rant regarding my Aunt Laura, only it has to do with smoking - she watched her father die from emphysema (he smoked all his life), she was diagnosed with lung issues herself a few years ago due to smoking, and she still can't/won't quit

(and just for the record, I'm not an anti-smoking fanatic, but Aunt Laura's one of those who definitely would be much healthier and enjoy a higher quality of life without smoking)

Fruit has a lower glycaemic index, which is to say the sugar in it (fructose) spikes the blood sugar less than sucrose or similar. Still spikes it, though.

Burgers don't contain that much sugar (usually), but the stuff you eat gets converted to dextrose (I think that's the name for it) and that's your blood sugar so it can shove it around your body. Still a spike.

Problem is, even if people know this, some will take the view that living bright rather than fading away is going to be the best option. It's also the easier option with more short-term reward.

I eat too much. I really need to lose a load of weight - heading for forty-two this coming year and could lose a third of my body weight to get down to a trim size. It's not as easy as knowing it. It's doing it. That's where the hard part comes in. Food that's bad for you is incredibly easy to come by. It does feel good after eating it. I'm trying to lose weight.

I've done it before. I went on a near religious crusade over it. Fell off that wagon.

It's not just knowing. Knowing is far in the future and there's a tasty piece of food there. It's doing.

The big issue lately is that carbs are bad too because they turn into or can turn into sugar - correct me if needed please.
And too much bread or starchy foods is bad too like pasta and potatoes for example I believe.

So yeah fast food unless its all healthy hah is still bad even if it is a wrap. Fast food salads come pre-made not fresh so its still bad. Well most places have it come in that way.
So unless said "I'm a diabetic" card playing person REALLY knows the whole deal or most of what is involved and has seen or is still seeing a nutritionist then they need to shut it. The only reason i can fathom absolutely needing that sugary or carb loaded food is if their blood sugar is way low and they need a quick fix to prevent a diabetic coma....or want to further the slow death.

Type one is more difficult to maintain I have been told as it requires more monitoring. But thats usually found out from birth instead of later on in life.

As raps said the living in the now kind of thing, I can understand that if the person per say has no one that really depends on them. Welll...I am at the point and have seen this in my family and friends who have it, that junk food may taste great now but I will feel like total crap, drained of energy and very bad almost as if I were sick about 30 minutes later. And for me I don't find that worth it at all.

last point is that having to change the way you eat, and live and sometimes do things is a very big drastic change that I can see some people not taking well to at all. I gather my kid and/or future kids will be happy I made those many good choices in the long run when I am still around as they graduate college or get married themselves...so for me this rant goes both ways.
I don't like hearing someone play the diabetic card and then eat and live in a way that is counter productive to that...but hey if you want to start losing sensation in your feet before you eventually have to get them amputated (worst case scenario I have seen) then by all means go for it.
Repeat after me, "I'm over it"
              Yeah we're so over, over
Things I hate, that even after all this time...I still came back to the scene of the crime

Ack! Why did you say that? Now I am, too, and there aren't any Zaxby's up here.

Fiance and I are starting after the first of the year. It's going to be really rough, but we have to for our health. He has high blood pressure, so we have to watch salt intake. I have some cholesterol problems (high triglycerides) so we have to watch fat. And both of us have blood sugar issues/diabetes in our families, so we have to watch that. Yay. Not.

I just got diagnosed with type 2 this month, and I'm making changes in my diet immediately. I know about the sugar in fruits and am limiting that...increasing veggies and cutting out as much processed sugar as I can, and going sugar free whenever possible. It's not easy.

And yeah too many carbs are bad and that's where I really have a problem cause I LOVE bread......and pasta is so easy to make! Like Raps said unhealthy food is easy to find and the healthier stuff is more difficult.

I think I may be a food addict. If I let myself, I could easily eat a lot more than I do, and I'll admit to planning about what I will eat next and thinking about it quite a bit. I like the stimulation of flavor and the experience of eating. In fact, all this caused me to gain some weight during my early twenties. When I graduated from high school, I weighed about 130 lbs soaking wet, and I'm about 5'6"-5'7." About three years ago, I weighed about 180 lbs. I've lost weight since then, though. This morning, when I weighed myself, I was at 157 lbs. I think that's probably an ideal weight for me, or at least close to being that.

I've learned to control my urges to eat, and I've also learned to pick foods that are healthy for me (for the most part . . . I do indulge sometimes, which is good, I think). People mentioned in the OP really need to do the same, unless they're okay with more health problems.

I don't even know what Zaxby's is and I think I'm craving it now.

My dad is a type 2 diabetic. He pulls stupid shit like eating a quarter of a key lime pie or more. BUT...he's been a LOT better about his diet and knowing that, say, yes, he can have pizza every once in a while, but only a piece or two. Before, he'd have at least 4 pieces. So he's a lot better about making sure he's ok.

Orange juice apparently REALLY helps with blood sugar by the way... I don't know if I have the exact numbers right, but one time he hadn't eaten all day and his blood sugar was like...70. He drank some orange juice and tested again and it was like over 130. So if your blood sugar's really low...drink orange juice lol.

The blood sugar testing is becoming a twice a day thing for me....and my fingers already hurt from it.

well I can tell you if you have a craving for something sweet-but don't want your blood sugar to spike-Agave nectar has a very low glycemic index(11-30 while table sugar is 60)-it's very similar to honey in both flavor and consistency, and can be substituted in most recipes that call for honey.

@Eisa; if your dad's Blood Sugar was 70.0, then that's what most people consider 'Pushing daisies' level.

Healthy blood sugar, if you have not eaten within 4 hours, should be between 4 and 6, depending on your size and activity level.

If you've eaten within 2 hours, it should be between 6 and 10.

@Lexia; you're right in that it's not longer 'sugar' that diabetics have to avoid; All carbohydrates, except insoluble fibres (which count as 'negative' carbs) should be Limited; In my own case, I'm allowed 75 carbs per meal per day (225 total), which is around 900 calories worth, give or take some wiggle room.

Someone shorter and lighter than me should aim for between 30 and 60 per meal; And yes, two slices of bread (or one bagel, or two slices of pizza) is 30 carbs.

Personally; the Highest my blood sugar has ever been was 34.6, and that was the day I was diagnosed. According to my doctor, that level of sugar can be lethal, simply by causing occlusions in the cappilaries in the brain tissue. I keep my blood sugar, now, averaging around 6.2ish; One thing to note is that Excercise actually produces a temporary sugar spike, so... yeah.

Of course, there's the flipside of the coin too; All Christmas break I was constantly badgered to 'try this' and 'try that' and 'why aren't you eating more' and so on and so forth and ARGH! I feel I have to get a 'Diabetic to Stupid' translator to talk to my family now.

Eat more veggies. For a while, I was eating bananas to get my potassium up, but my doctor told me to scale it back a bit for the sake of my blood sugar.

If you like mushrooms, instead of using a traditional crust, use portabello mushrooms with the gills cut off. Brush the caps with olive oil and top the ex-gill side with sauce and pizza toppings. Put them in the oven and when the cheese is melted they're done.
