    I can't say "exactly" enough. I really can't.

Sometimes burning bridges is a very bad idea, this one of them.

unless you can burn that bridge with them still on it. *evil grin*

      but yeah i understand.
i never told the boss the real reason i quit - they cut my hours in half and even then i didn't get full hours. so there was nothing worth staying in the area for after i finished the degree. so i quit right before christmas and moved to my BF's place

so i used the "i'm moving and haven't seen my bf in over a year" excuse for quitting. so we parted on good terms

Smoking isn't a protected status except in one or two states, so far, and even then, it only covers while on the company's dine and property, which Blas' company is covered by, anyway.

My company won't hire anyone who smokes, and if they find you are a smoker, it's an immediate termination. By current state law, they can do that.

Why is that, Andara? I'm just curious why someone would be barred from employment just because they smoke?

Supposedly companies save a buttload of money somehow...I'm not sure I see how.

One could argue that smokers are gonna get sick more and take more days off...

One could also argue that smokers will take more smoke breaks, thereby taking company time away.

These are both great points, but you can't say that ALL smokers are going to do those things, and it seems pretty unfair to punish those of us who don't abuse the privilege for the ones who do.

But then again, I was raised with the crazy notion that we take responsibility for our OWN actions, and not other peoples. Hence, I should not be taking the heat for something someone else did wrong.

In the case of my work, specifically, the former owner and the current as well both had total anti-smoking hate going on. And since smoking is not a protected status and the state doesn't have a law protecting off-company legal activities, they are free to do it. They could do the same for drinking alcohol, but it would be much harder to enforce, and much less popular.
