  • Cigarette smokers suing and winning.

    Example: http://www.comcast.net/articles/news...Tobacco.Award/

In and itself, I'm not saying anything bad about anybody just because they smoke. BUT when they know the risks and then pay the price for it and decide to sue that just gets on my nerves.

That's like a race car driver who knows he/she can get injured by racing then gets injured and decides to sue the firesuit manufacturer and the sanctioning body.

    What.

That's the stupidest thing I've ever seen! Even from the standpoint of a long-time smoker, what the hell is wrong with that woman?! 'Your products gave me cancer even though they had a warning label saying they would give me cancer, and I still want money!' Christ. /facepalm

Weren't similar cases thrown OUT of court for being so utterly ridiculous?

That judge won't last long, I hope.

No way will that hold up in the higher courts. That judge is a fucking idiot.

I smoked for close to 25 years off and on before I quit and if I develop cancer now or at some point in the future and it's related to smoking, it's no ones fucking fault but my own.

Smokers get a bad enough rap without people pulling this crap. All of us (yes, although former- I still consider myself one of 'them') get painted with the same brush of all the asshole, rude smokers out there....this just adds to it.

There have been cases where the smoker does win. They begged for pity from the jury and they gave it, despite it just being a fact that smoking gives cancer to you. May not be right away, and you may even get by for decades, but it does harm you and those you smoke around.

My mother and aunt have been smoking since they were teens. They're both over 60, now, and they knew when they started that it had the potential to do very bad things to their bodies.

Anybody who made the decision to start smoking in the last, oh, 50 years or so needs to suck it up and deal with what they've done to themselves and stop trying for handouts.

Next stop: People suing McDonalds for making them fat.

I agree with your main point, but is this really a good example? For instance, it seems to me that if you can show that, because of a *faulty* firesuit, you were more badly injured than you would have been with the properly-functional one you had every reason to think you were wearing, suing would be perfectly reasonable.

Then wait, idiots like my ex coworker will be suing alcohol distilleries blaming them for giving him liver problems.

The warnings are there for a reason. It's been a well known fact for several years now that cigarettes are BAD for you. Very, very, very bad. They can and a lot of times WILL kill you.

But no, let's just sue, cuz that's really going to make your last years on earth, which are going to probably be miserable anyway, better and overall better quality of life, because you'll have money. Yeah, if you even get your settlement before you die of lung cancer.

                      NOTE: Somewhat off-topic subject here.

As a non-smoker (never even touched one), I don't quite "get" the mentality that some smokers have towards certain things.

Example: One time I asked a girl who was a known smoker if she was dating a guy for say a year and she really liked him and he told her if she doesn't quit smoking he's going to leave her, would you quit for him? She told me no she won't if he doesn't like the fact that she smokes he can hit the road.

She then told me, "drag racing cars is dangerous too, let's say if you hit the powerball and bought a racecar, but your girlfriend tells you if you set one foot on a dragstrip I'll leave you, would you do it?" I simply told her, "If it's a girl that I don't see a future with I would say adios it's been my dream you're not going to ruin it, BUT if it's a girl I really like and don't want to lose her I'll step out of the seat and hire someone (preferably a female) to drive the car for me. Everybody wins."

My boyfriend the alcoholic has constantly threatened to leave me if I don't quit smoking. I've had to hide it from him before and pretend to have quit. The funny thing is, HE smokes socially, but because he can "control" it and I "can't", that's why he can smoke and I can't. Of course, I figure it's just an alcoholic using their overly poisoned brain cells to justify what they can and can't do and just nitpicking at someone who has a different vice.

If he wants to leave because I still have a smoke here and there, fine. Go away. Throw away 2 years with me because I still smoke sometimes. Even though you drink out of control and smoke ciggs yourself when you drink.

If you don't like smokers, don't date them, then. Plain and simple.

I'm not and never will be a smoker, but I'm on her side on that one.

If you're dating a "known smoker," then you really don't have a right to demand that they quit. You can ask, you can plead your case, and you can definitely demand that you're personal space be smoke free. But you can't dictate how another adult lives their life, even if you love that person and want what's best for them.

The one caveat I would add would be if one of the pair were pregnant. In that case, I think the guy certainly has the right to ask that the woman not smoke for the safety of his child. Conversely, the woman has the right to ask that the guy not smoke around her or anything that she's near.

My mom actually made a point to quit smoking cigarettes completely during the time she was pregnant with me and again with my brother. Not sure why she didn't stay quit, though.
