  • "how to" guides are easily available to terrorists via tv shows and articles

This really annoys me. There are SO many doomsday type shows out there now. I cant tell you how many times one of these shows have practically given a blueprint that anyone could follow and cause mass terror. One of those "it would be really bad if someone did this.. and if they did this is how they would do it". ARGGGG how freaking stupid can you be!!! I just read an article about how dangerous pointing easily purchased lasers at planes can be. They even specified that the most dangerous time would be during the final descent and that its nearly impossible to find the people responsible. Oh how easily 200 people could be killed they say. I wont even touch on all of those csi type shows that shows that practically give you step by step instructions. Funny how you can add comments to many articles but generally can't with these types.

Y'know, I heard that about the movie Fight Club, which if you haven't seen it is about two guys beating people up and blowing stuff up. They give several recipes for homemade explosives in the movie, none of which work. (No, I didn't try them...I already knew the correct recipes ). But the story goes that originally they included real recipes which were later modified to prevent irresponsible and/or malicious audience members from hurting people.

I can pretty much guarantee that anyone thinking of doing a terrorist act is already miles ahead of any reality tv show writer.

Wait, you're worried because people can get at the information to do harm to each other?

Jeez, where have you been? It's trivially easy to do harm to another person. And only marginally above that to do harm to lots of people. Without even trying hard, I can think of several doomsday scenarios which will harm several hundred people.

It's sad how easy it is. And you want to know why?

It is impossible to stop the lone person on a mission when that person does not care about survival.

They can buy any number of implements to make lethal weapons, and do so with cash. They can deliver the items themselves to the intended target zone. And then they can use those same items to harm and/or kill hundreds of innocent people.

The only reason we haven't had such attacks has been due to incompetence.

The writers who write these scenarios are irrelevant to the people who would carry them out. However, writing and publishing them gives our designated protectors the opportunity to find new methods of us being attacked, and they can then defend against them.

Don't worry so much about the terrorists learning. The incompetent ones won't succeed in doing their damage. And the competent ones? They don't need the help.

When you say "trivial", do you mean its insignificant? Or do you mean its easy?

Should have clarified that: Trivial, in this case, meant easy.

I didn't know trivial meant easy.....I learned something today.

It doesn't; I think it was just misused. I just guessed the intended meaning by the context of Pedersen's post.

I have used trivial the same way Pedersen did, but on reviewing dictionary.com, it's not a generally accepted use. It's probably a variation specific to the geek dialect.

As for "how to" guides: well, if I were inclined to do a lot of damage, I could very easily do so. Gunpowder can be made with a simple trip to a farm, any past or present volcanic region, and any fire.

A more deadly substance can be constructed with a combination of two cleaning chemicals, one of which can be easily substituted for by the products of the human body. The other can be substituted by another easily accessed chemical as well.

There are two big show-stopping problems, however. The first is simple: I'm too damn ethical to do any such thing. The second is simple, too. I'd look like something was really wrong. I'd be one of those people that security latches on to just because something in their behaviour is 'off'.
