Something my boyfriend brought up and I agree with him on.
Although over at CS we often hear comments such as "What sign? Oh that sign? That's not big enough"... this is once instance where it's true.
Here in KY they have yet to instill any regulation regarding "No handguns" or "No firearms" signs.
In some places the notices are relatively clear... ish. Like when he and I went to open a joint account at the local bank, I saw that, below the bank hours they'd also posted "No firearms allowed" and we turned back to the car so that he could stow his handgun.
However not all signs here are so clear. Apparently one of the local malls also prohibits handguns, but... well I never saw the sign. According to him it's a tiny emblem of a "NO" circle around a gun - about the size of a thumbnail - and it is posted only at SOME of the entrances. So if you enter through one of the unmarked doors you'd never know.
What my boyfriend wishes - which I fully agree with - is that the state would regulate the signage required. In Texas for example, the signs fall under what they call "30.06" regulation, referring to the actual law.
This sign is an example of what Texas requires. It has to be in one-inch lettering, be placed visible to the public, and must be in English and Spanish... otherwise it's not legally-binding.
So you can't invent your own sign and set someone up for failure if they don't notice it... especially if your own personal sign is a thumbnail sized "no" sign.
