  • "No handgun" regulated signs

Something my boyfriend brought up and I agree with him on.

Although over at CS we often hear comments such as "What sign? Oh that sign? That's not big enough"... this is once instance where it's true.

Here in KY they have yet to instill any regulation regarding "No handguns" or "No firearms" signs.

In some places the notices are relatively clear... ish. Like when he and I went to open a joint account at the local bank, I saw that, below the bank hours they'd also posted "No firearms allowed" and we turned back to the car so that he could stow his handgun.

However not all signs here are so clear. Apparently one of the local malls also prohibits handguns, but... well I never saw the sign. According to him it's a tiny emblem of a "NO" circle around a gun - about the size of a thumbnail - and it is posted only at SOME of the entrances. So if you enter through one of the unmarked doors you'd never know.

What my boyfriend wishes - which I fully agree with - is that the state would regulate the signage required. In Texas for example, the signs fall under what they call "30.06" regulation, referring to the actual law.

This sign is an example of what Texas requires. It has to be in one-inch lettering, be placed visible to the public, and must be in English and Spanish... otherwise it's not legally-binding.

So you can't invent your own sign and set someone up for failure if they don't notice it... especially if your own personal sign is a thumbnail sized "no" sign.

I'd like to see better regulation on notification signage, myself. Particularly since ignorance of the law is not a defense.

OT - I hope I'm not the only one that is amused by a gun-related regulation having the designation of 30.06.

I didn't notice that until you brought it up, though it does seem fitting, if not ironic.

And there is an issue with getting that kind of regulation in place. Namely that a number of pro-gun activists see it (well, anything relating to guns really) as an anti-gun regulation and must be quashed, regardless of how unobtrusive it is. But then, these are the same people who feel that they should be able to take a gun wherever in the world that they want, and to hell what anyone else thinks.

I just figured it would be a given thing not to carry a gun into a bank.

Depends on where you are. In some places, it's not at all uncommon to see guns worn in banks.

I had a friend who grew up in California and moved out of state. While passing through Arizona, he amused the locals when he told a security guard about someone wearing a gun in a bank.

Here's what there ought to be a law against: applying "ignorance is no excuse" to any situation where non-ignorance is not a reasonable expectation.

I know here in AZ all places of business are required to place a sign provided to them by the state that declares no firearms, in all places I have seen it, its about average eye level at the door to the business. http://camerafraud.files.wordpress.com/2009/12/4229.jpg

I regularly have my pistol on me when I go to the bank, which really is not uncommon here at all tho I have remembered to stow it when I go to the post office (most of the time..) and recently we passed the law where you can carry into a business that serves alcohol (unless specifically posted not allowed) you just cant drink.

Thus far I have only found one place that claims no weapons, but was refused to be shown a sign anywhere, the security guard said 'its common knowledge' but as I was leaving anyway, didn't stay to protest the legality of the no sign.

Wow I feel I put too much, sorry, I am just someone that loves my right to have a weapon on me, I get a little excited talking about it. Forgive me.

I'm glad that I live in an area that's safe enough to live in without having to carry a handgun.

I'd feel a hell of a lot safer where I live if I were allowed to have a gun in my purse or coatpocket, just in case. Better to have one and never need it.

Although as soon as I have enough money, I'm getting a handgun for the apartment and it will be loaded and ready under my bed, just in case.

For now, all I have is a baseball bat, cooking knives, and an old golf club.

My little brother has a machete, I wonder where the hell he ever found that.

Because, as we all know, when a firearm enters a bank it's molecules catastrophically destabilize and engulf the city in an explosion the likes of which we haven't seen before.

Or is it that having a weapon of any kind emits a virus that insidiously hijacks the user's brain and incites them to commit felonies on a whim?

On a more serious note, I agree with HYHYBT, all too often people are expected to know far more about the way the laws in a given area work than can reasonably be expected without everyone having their very own lawyer brigade following them around.

No, it just seems like it should be common sense. =p

Cold Steel will sell you a machete for like under $40 bucks. They aren't the best, but they're decently sharp and scary-looking:

That won't fit in my purse, silly. Although I guess I could take it outside with me when I smoke for when my neighbor peeps out the window to watch me smoke.
