  • Propaganda on Facebook

I have a few Facebook friends that post nothing but propaganda (a few from the right and a few from the left) for their status day in and day out.

I guess this is really a "I hate propaganda in general" thread more than anything else, but WTF?

Do people really believe this BS? Are they so close minded that they don't bother to look at both sides, and end up at the far end of whichever spectrum they are on?

Ugh. The stuff that is posted from the right isn't much more than thinly veiled racism, while the stuff from the left isn't much more than pure unrealistic idealism.

Why can't folks do some work and realize that most of the answers are actually somewhere in the middle?

    /rant off

Note-Tried to edit the title, but couldn't. I spelled propaganda wrong....

I have a friend who basically uses facebook as a ground to religiously convert people. Every day, she's posting multiple passages from the Bible.

Well, gee, I was on the fence for this whole Christianity thing until I read those passages. Now I can't wait to sign up!

If she REALLY wants to convert people, she should post Chick tracts. Those are like insta-converters!

I recently found an old friend on Facebook and had to block him within a week. I don't care what religion you ascribe to, just don't make your entire Facebook into one big push for that religion. I got tired of seeing all these religious quotes on my news feed. Then he started with some real interesting conspiracy theory type stuff. Yeah, blocked him right then and there. Still friends because I don't want to be asked why I unfriended him. I don't mind the occasional status update on a cause someone strongly believes in, but don't over do it.

I received so much propaganda on Facebook that I gave up and cancelled my account.

Okies...I was eating when I read this. Multi-grain cheerios all over my laptop screen. I don't think that's good.

But I did appreciate the giggle. Thanks!

I'm afraid even to use the "like" buttons you see just about everywhere online, because, without the filler other people post (what they ate, when they took a shower, etc.) it would *look* like I was trying to use it to push something.

Oh I hate that. I have hidden people from my wall because everything thing they were posting was about cancer.

Yes you have survived it, very happy, but I don't want to read about it every day.

Somewhat along those lines, I've had people, both on LJ and FB try to tell me what I can and can't post on my own pages! Sorry, but that shit doesn't fly with me. Don't like that I've updated my MG project gallery, or that I've described my model railroad? Don't read it then. I'm not going to change how I do things because certain people don't like it.

But, I agree with the propaganda. I try to keep my political commentary to a minimum. Back when Bush was in office, certain people I knew were constantly posting links and other crap--Moveon.org was a particular favorite. Now that the Messiah is in office, do I do that? Nope.

Back when I still used Myspace, one of my contacts kept spamming Ron Paul propoganda. I don't really mind who people support, but it annoyed the hell out of me when I had to page thru 7 or 8 pages of that shit to find actual content. I ended up unfriending him over that.

Yes you have survived itare, very happy for you, but I don't want to read about it every 5 times a day. I and all your other friends are aware of this.
fixed that for me. I'm not kidding, one girl would post "it's monday, what a great day to be a lesbian in <city>" "so happy i'm a lesbian" "hanging out with my gay friends today" etc, and if anyone called her on it(I'm not kidding it was EVERY status update), she'd start spamming their wall about how much of a homophobe they were, and how they needed to respect her and her sexuality...

AFAIK-someone's sexuality is between them and their consenting adult partner(s)-none of my damn business...or anyone else's for that matter(I'm looking at you government!)-do what you need/want to do(as long as it's between consensual adults), and leave me out of it, I am not part of this equation. I personally think most people would find it offensive if I posted "yup still loving my husband's dick"(and anyone that didn't think it offensive....well I don't think I want to know those people anymore-hey friend filter for cutting the dead weight!)

I used to do that. These days, the only thing I do with 'propaganda' that is I post quotes I find particularly moving, which is occasionally from the Bible. I try to avoid political commentary, although I have been known to occasionally make fun of Glenn Beck's chalkboard.

And I've also had to repeatedly disavow the shooting of Gabrielle Giffords because of the fact that my political views are listed as Conservative. That's frustrating, but that's mostly been in response to all the people messaging me about it...

Other than that, I try to avoid propaganda. If I'm displeased with someone (including a political or social figure) I might post it, but I like to think I try to avoid doing that.

Some of my friends do the whole "it's so great to be gay today!" thing from my Gilbert group. And it's like...yes, I know. It is great. But seriously, every status you have had the past week has been about being gay/lesbian/bi/whatever. There has got to be something else going on in your life.
