Not having seen a movie = blasphemy

I really like the Wheel of Time series, but I can completely understand that the writing style and such is not for everyone. When I bought the first book, I couldn't put it down and just flew through reading it. I've heard of others where they struggled to get even a third of the way through. And there's nothing wrong with either person, because tastes are unique and not everyone needs to like the same things. In fact, the world would be mighty boring if everyone had the same interests.

The books I can't get into are most Anne Rice books I've tried to read. I've heard people just swoon over her. And granted, I really enjoyed watching Interview with the Vampire, which I saw before reading the book. I tried to start that series and just could not get into it. I put down Interview with the Vampire about halfway through. The Vampire Lestat I actually thoroughly enjoyed and is the only book of the series I kept my copy of. Then the third one (Queen of the Damned) I don't think I made it past chapter 2. I've also tried reading another of her books that is not part of the vampire series and found it utterly boring and without merit. I personally think her writing is piss poor, but I have friends who love her

Danielle Steel is another author that I don't think can write for a damn, but then I'm not the romance-reading type. I gave one of her books a try in high school because she was all the rage with all the girls in my class. I managed to finish that book somehow, even though I hated it the whole time, and when I mentioned it to a friend of mine, she told me that was one of Danielle Steel's best works. Yeah, I decided not to touch another of her books...ever

I've a friend of mine who loves RenFests, fantasy and the like...who had never watched Princess Bride. Had another friend who was a big fan of anime...and had never seen Akira. In both cases, I was shocked they hadn't, and since both movies are favorites of mine, I was a bit enthusiastic about 'em, I'll admit. Big thing is, it was a movie I knew they *personally* like, based on other interests...and I'd not have held it against them for not liking 'em. Nor did I push after the first 'OMG, you like X and *haven't* seen this?!?!' reaction.

What I don't understand is the reaction in the opposite direction...ie, letting people effectively keep you from seeing/reading something you might enjoy, just to spite them. The people who say they hate something popular without trying it...tend not to get much respect from me

maybe one day when the Harry Potter DVD's are in a box set and in the christmas sales, maybe then I'll buy it, but if it's like my copy of LOTR, it might be some years before I eventually get round to watching it (or reading the book's for that matter).

Some time's the topic of movies come up between me and captain dickhead over a pint and I keep forgetting he has not seen any Alien movie and perhaps Predator, save for AvP (and pehaps requiem) and Predators, so he has no idea why I'm pissed about the gestation times in AVP being about an hour or less compared to a day in the first, or the way both were watered down to get a 12a/15 certificate, iir it was 12a in the cinema and 15 extended cut, it would have been better if it was aimed at the 18+ market (and written by someone who cares about the AvP franchise)

More recently as when ever there is a movie that kills the conversation by his not seeing it*, I find myself instead talking about the last Cinema Snob review I saw, I sent him a text after whatching "Rug suckers from outerspace" reading "Vaccum cleaner murderfucks people and takes a shit, this film is awesome." I wouldn't go out and find the movie, not that I expect HMV to stock it, but I think I don't need to as Brad rarely leaves out the good parts, yet months later, he got round to watching the video and actaully told me he is going to buy it via amazon ?!? pay good money for that?

*I could still say what I was going to say, but without seeing the film in question or how this film is relevant to this other film or what we were talking about, alot of it might be lost, or would just spoil the movie if he got round to seeing it.
EG he had never seen the first two saw's and I had recently seen the third and told him he would be better off watching those two first as it damn well spoilt those if you dive straight into 3


Tim Burton's Batman is enjoyable if getting on in looks, but the others went down hill and never recovered, but the nolan reboot atleast grounded it more in reality.

Fight Club was years old by the time I got round to watching it, it's one of those movies I don't really need to see again in a hurry, but I did like it, although XKCD ran a strip about fightclub recently that is valid for alot of posters here

Year's ago one of the receptionists who left for another job was reading one series of books and said I should try them, I forgot what they were called and although I did write it down, I lost it. I loaned her my DVD of the company of wolves as she might like it, she had it a while and returned it unwatched.

Funnily enough, I'm also guilty enough of the other side of this when it comes to people who have never seen Star Wars, which is surprising because sci fi isn't everyone's cup of tea obviously.

At this point, Wizard of Oz is pretty dated. I actually liked the books better, and they were decidedly on the odd side.

I have also found myself unable to read the Lord of the Rings. It's on the same shelf as Little Women as far as being able to hold my interest.

Ok I haven't seen any of the movies y'all have listed except for Wizard of Oz and I had that shoved down my throat so many times I hate the damn thing. I did watch the Blair Witch Project years ago and thought it was not worth the hype. And I hate hate hate those dumb ass stupid stoner type comedies. They are lame.

Now on the other hand I would be surprised if someone hadn't watched a classic like the Graduate...or Rosemary's Baby or the Exorcist...they are must see movies in my opinion.

My husband pulls this on me ALL the time. He'll start about some movie that I'd heard about but never worked up the interest to see, and when I say I've never seen it, he goes bug-eyed and scrambles for the DVD shelf or Netflix to force me to watch it. He did this with Snatch. Twice. I fell asleep both times.

We do have a bit of an arrangement...we pick out 3 movies each we want the other to see, and randomly select one when we're in a movie-watching mood until we run out. Then we start over. Expands each other's horizons (he was pleasantly surprised to find he liked Memoirs of a Geisha and Secondhand Lions, whereas he introduced me to Labyrinth and V for Vendetta) and helps us really learn each others' tastes. There have been bombs on both sides...I didn't care much for Fight Club either, and he couldn't stand Misery or even Old Yeller.

I'll reiterate my point. That there probably is an instinctive reaction to someone not having seen a cultural touchstone.

But to me, its like chocolate. I don't like chocolate, which is surprising to people. That's fine, so they stop giving me chocolate. THey don't say I have no sense of taste because I don't like chocolates.

As a fan of Science Fiction and vampire movies I used to get crap about Blade Runner and Nosferatu respectively.

I can't get what other people got out of Blade Runner anyhow because like the original unmolested version of Stargate, you can't find a Blade Runner cut where Deckard isn't a replicant.

I don't mind if someone is shocked at me never having seen the movie, it's when they get in my face and try to force me to watch it. I get sick of the aggressive snobbery some have towards the entertainment choices of others.

Though to be fair, it's not just the "high brow" people who are like this. I've gotten crap for having never seen American Idol.

There's also a difference between not having seen and not liking things. For example, I've seen Fight Club. I didn't like it much, but I've SEEN it.

I try to be fairly culturally literate, though I've fallen behind in music.

I think it can be surprising if someone's never seen a movie that's become as much a part of the popular zeitgeist, if that's the word.

We have a friend who has never seen Ghostbusters...she gets teased about it because even mom's annoyed with her choice of movies and has been trying to get her to watch something other than bad melodramas for the past...probably 5 years.
