When in doubt, ask the mods, either privately (usually better) or publicly. And if you get the approval from one mod, and another gets on your case, let them know you'd asked and gotten approval, *politely*. Different mods will have different interpretations of the rules, and on the off chance they didn't talk, they won't always know what another mod approved.Happiness is too rare in this world to actually lose it because someone wishes it upon you. -Flyndaran

although most message boards i go to allow full swearing, except for PFB and M3C.

I'm guessing the OP got into trouble on a completely different site over the use of a swear word.
Just reading between the lines, I assume the site didn't specifically list the swear word used.
I am also assuming other members had used "colourful" language, but the OP ended up smacked down because his word was considered to be more of a no-no.
Because the rules did not say he couldn't use the word, and because other members had used swearing and the mods had looked the other way, I am thinking the OP felt he was singled out.
I can certainly see how it would seem that way if that really was the case, and I am correct in my guessing.
The thing is, that kind of thing does and has happened here and on CS.
There are just some words or slurs that are considered much less socially acceptable and much more offensive than others.
So, while it looks like we may be giving free rein to one person in their swearing while clamping down on another, what is really going on is that the second person has used a word that has caused some type of problem in the past and has been previously reported as offensive, and the mods are just trying to head off the inevitable backlash.Point to Ponder:
Is it considered irony when someone on an internet forum makes a post that can be considered to look like it was written by a 3rd grade dropout, and they are poking fun of the fact that another person couldn't spell?

When you are a customer someplace, a store or a forum, then they do have the right to refuse service. Maybe you didn't feel you were an SC there, but the ower and his/her staff obviously felt differently. And, since it's their property, they get to make the call.
Oh, wait, are youi saying it's my responsibility to read the TOS? Just like it's the mods responsibility to do their job and read the effing posts.
On the other hand none of us ever had to agree to read every post before accepting the unpaid job of moderating. At least not here. Maybe it's different other places less busy.
But seriously blaming the moderators for missing a problem post because they can't read each post, is just as far-fetched as blaming a store clerk for theft because they can't follow each and every customer around to to keep them from shoplifting. It's just not possible or practical to have a staff that large.
Only speaking for Raps' forums, we expect that when we have to deal with a situation that the people involved will react like adults and own responsibility or, perhaps, decide that our community isn't a good fit and leave without flouncing (hey, we can't be everything to everybody and that's cool). People who look for ways to thumb their nose at the staff or continue the same behavior under the radar, usally DO eventually end with all of the *their* posts getting read before anyone else sees them.
The good news is that most people do react like adults.Last edited by Dips; 08-18-2011, 10:24 PM.They are never invited to cocktail parties, which is a shame in a way, because I'm pretty sure the world would like them better drunk. -Boozy

or reply in such a way that it brings attention to the offense. (especially since i think some of us get our posts 'reviewed' more than others at times which means we can take advantage of that fact...)
now i've also been to forums and chat groups that allowed absolutely no swearing whatsoever, not even "F**K" or "WTF" or "gay" - if being used to mean 'lame', or anything else that could be construed as foul language. I had a lot of fun using "blessed" when I really meant something entirely different .... although we did ask one of the british moderators if she considered "bloody" to be on the no-no list (but that was in fun and it made her laugh I think).

Day shift at work is not allowed to swear at all. Because their boss doesn't like it.
Is it against policy? Not really. It doesn't say anywhere that you can't swear. It just says to conduct yourself in a professional manner. Everyone swears. I don't work with anyone as bad as Dane Cook. But because this woman says she's religious and swearing "offends" her, NO ONE can swear. I guess the next step in this retarded thing is my boss won't allow pink because she doesn't like pink.
By the by, my mom is the most religious person I know, and she says "God Dammit" and "Jesus Christ!" more often than ANYONE I know.
Someone has to tell that boss that this is a factory, not a church. Get over it.
On the other hand, while I usually have a low to moderate level of swearing and am pretty tolerant of it, my ex boyfriend was HORRIBLE about it. We got into many huge fights at home because we'd been out to dinner and he was motherfucker-ing cocksuck-ing bitchassmothefuckingdouchebag shithead asshole-ing in front of a table of old people or CHILDREN with parents glaring at us!!!! I mean, I'm not one to always think of others, especially children, but that much profanity is just unacceptable in front of other people in public.
It didn't do any help when I'd tell him to stop swearing, he'd just scream at me with a few more swear words, or if I let one slip later, he'd scream at me that I was a hypocrite. Err....I am swearing in the car. Not at Applebees in front of a family with small children talking about being drunk and starting a fight with a stupid faggot who wanted to suck my dick I just knew it so I was going to fucking pound his face in.

My one rule is no swearing in front of children.
Often children are either impressionable or been taught not to say anything to adults that are bothering them.
If it bothers an adult they may politely ask me to knock it off but god forbid if your rude to me about it.Jack Faire

You looked for a loophole so you could willfully violate their rules and then you got caught and called on it.
Yes, I do that all the time. Is there something wrong with that? Is it a bad policy? Does it make me wrong evne though technically no rules were violated?
If tat's the case, it works both ways. It's not ok for the others to look for loopholes to find reasons to punish me.
For instance if there was some mod who had a really personal problem with me. From real life. he knows raps won't let him just ban me because of personal feelings, as i haven't done anything wrong, so he starts scouring every one of my posts really trying hard to find something, anything, he can pin on me so he can get rid of me.
I know, that's largely fantasy, but still, if it happened would you think it was ok?
