I still think they were cowardly.

BUT in fairness sake, some people enter in a state of shock when in contact with the unexpected, And can not do anything.

so maybe they were just too surprised to have a reaction.

As deeply painful as it is to 'defend' such cowardly behavior... It sounds like they were all waiting for someone to step up...It is far harder to be the first person in a crowd to do something. That being said, it just shows none of them were leaders, as well as all of them being cowards.

I rarely say it...but sue 'em...heck, I'm sure some laywer could find reasonable cause to sue the store and have it stick! What's a worse lawsuit going to be 'We jumped someone beating up on a couple women with the intent of stopping him' or 'we stood by and let one of our employees get beaten badly'

Considering that one of them mentioned thinking of grabbing a bat and declining based on potential liability, it's obvious that at least one of them was not stricken by shock, but was both a coward and a sociopath.

I've been in a situation where I stepped in to defend someone smaller than me from someone larger and stronger than me, and while I was worried about damage I might cause, I was worried about hurting the person I was attacking too much because it was someone I cared about - just not enough to let him hurt someone else.

I don't think it's fair to call him a sociopath. For all we know he could have been in shock, but just reacted differently. Cowardly? Yes, but not necessarly sociopathic.

When you weigh the choice between letting a coworker be beaten, possibly to death, and the potential for the store being liable for you stepping up to stop that beating, and you come out in favor of letting the coworker get beaten to death, you are a sociopath.

                Hi all,

Thanks for the support and the vilification of the guy and the managers. Definitely soothing to the soul. Kinkoid, I <3 you in a totally platonic "want to worship you from afar for your fantastic wit" kinda way.

Got some more details, talked to some other friends who are CWs at the store, and a few more pieces fell into place, such as it were. So, for the purpose of clarification, let's call the 3 managers Dick, Chris and Moe, shall we?

According to a friend, (Rachel, let's say), Dick Chris and Moe were summoned by the first CW to be attacked, when she ran back to them, face bleeding and screaming about some guy going apeshit and attacking her and mom and sister, and destroying stuff. Dick and Chris ran out to "help", Moe ran to call the police. Moe showed up later after calling the police.

Dick and Chris showed up in time to see sister strip the remains of her shirt off and attack Nathan to get him to let go of mom. Rachel showed up, more as a witness and to ward customers off and out of the path of danger. Chris is the one who made a move for a baseball bat. Moe stood in shock and Dick? Dick STOPPED Chris, saying "let's not agitate him more, ok?" To which Chris replied "why, afraid he'll sue us for stopping him?!?!" Dick had no reply to that...

Meanwhile, from what I understand, Moe...stood there and stared. Sister finally clawed the everloving shit out of Nathan's hand that had ahold of mom and when his grip loosened, Chris swooped in, grabbed mom and dragged her out. He then yelled at mom and sister to go go go get the hell out. This was when mom butt-scooted along the floor and crawled to another aisle, then she and sister ran to the breakroom, where first CW was getting some paper towels to staunch the bleeding.

In the fallout, police showed up, etc. Mom and sister ended up going to a local clinic to get checked out, as this store purposefully keeps them under the minimum hours required to give benefits, so neither had insurance. Mom has pretty good insurance through stepdad, as he works for the military, but sister doesn't. Sister works mainly under Dick, who out of compassion (ha!!) has been "really good at working with her for light duty stuff". Well, no shit, sherlock, how could he justify putting her on regular duty when she's being hailed as a heroine for attacking the guy?? He usually pushes her to get an insane amount of work done in very little time. Now he's conceding to let her sit in a chair and build Christmas displays, one of the easiest tasks in the store. She still can't really move her head. She has a followup appointment at the clinic tomorrow, I think. Right now she's taking 800mg motrins to help with inflammation and cyclobenzapine at night to help her sleep (I think that's the name of the relaxant she's on...)

Mom still hasn't been back at work. We're waiting for her regular doctor to clear her, after the mess that was made of her head and arm. She's spent the last week staying at home, drugged to the hilt, essentially.

I sent them both cards and little gifty things, since that's all I can do at this point...

And that's all the info I have for now. Gonna call and check in with her again later today, after I get off work. Again, thanks for all of the support, guys. So very much appreciated

Needless to say, all medical bills are to be covered by the company since the attack happened while they were on the clock, and on company property.

They don't need insurance. This is a workman's comp thing. I tore up my knee on the job, HAD insurance, and never had to use a penny of it. All workman's comp, right down to the PT and happy pills.

Do not let them fail to file for workman's comp.

And while they are at it, they really do need to discuss the aptly nicknamed "Dick" with a reputable lawyer.

Well, from the description, sounds like Chris is a decent enough guy, Moe was just shocked, and Dick is an asshole.

"Let's not agitate him more", my ass. How do you agitate anyone *more* who's already beating on people in a rage? And what's the alternative? Hope he'll get bored and stop? Some people...

Now, personally I wouldn't be too hard on Moe; we all like to think we'd be the heroic defenders of the weak in situations like these, swooping in to defeat the bad guys and rescue the girl. But fact is, until you've actually been in such a situation, you never know how you'll react. I haven't, so I don't. Fight, flight, or freeze are all possible reactions, and afterwards, you may wish you'd done something differently. Doesn't necessarily make you a coward.

However, I'm not quite clear about the timeline; what, exactly, were Chris and Dick doing while Moe called the cops? That should've taken him at least 1-3 minutes, but the description makes it sound like he was there together with Chris and Dick. That's something that might need clarification in case a lawsuit is filed.

Moe did exactly the right thing imo, call the police. Most likely he thought..well the other two should be able to help..then figured that police involvement would be a great idea.

Sorry all this happened Lupo *hugs*

Moe had his cell phone. Managers are allowed to carry them, for just such emergencies. He ran to grab it from the office, then took off after Chris and Dick while on the phone with police. He arrived shortly after they did, probably within less than 2 minutes, I think... But from what I understand, he didn't get the full impact of "attacked" until AFTER he'd hung up, saying he needed police at the store, there was an attacking SC. I think he believed "Rampaging psycho"was an exaggeration and they had an irate customer who was breaking things and pushed CW around and maybe she fell wrong or something.

I'd have to say Chris is a bit of a limpdick as well, seeing as how he let the say so of a total pussy keep him from taking care of business.

I'm really sorry, Lupo and I'm praying and sending virtual hugs to your mom and sis.

I'd hope I'd react differently in a situation like this. Male, female or whatever - it's appalling how a couple of them behaved while this was happening. I truly hope that if I'd ever find myself witnessing something like this (god forbid), that I'd react appropriately.
