Which is something I never do. I'm a PC person myself. I know and like it. But if a customer asks I'll tell them the truth about the pros and cons of both PC and MAC and let them decide and be happy in making sure that they have both the computer they want and the computer that they need.

I do the same in the Android vs iOS debate. Both are good in their own way, both have bad points. My job is (if someone asks) to let them know the pros and cons of each and let them decide.

If they're happy, great. If they come back and complain that "X" is a hunk of junk when I gave them information on "X", "Y", and "Z", I'll nod, smile and keep my mouth shut.

However if someone blames me and starts screaming at me for "X" having [problem] when I pointed out to them that "X" had [problem] as one of its cons...then all bets are off and I'll tear into them just as hard as they're tearing into me.

That's the part that irks me no end. Everything has flaws...EVERYTHING.

It's what happens when you have something designed by humans.

But there are some people out there that are so brand happy that they can not be honest about those flaws.

It's even worse when those people are the people in the companies tech support. I can remember a nice long chat with a techie at US Robotics (they made modems) who told me for three hours that USR Products do not go bad and that it must be something I'm doing wrong in configuration. For three straight hours I was told to try things that I had already tried. I don't blame him for making me do all that again once.

But the fourth time he had me go through the troubleshooting checklist made me really mad.

Eventually he passed me to a senior tech supervisor who took a quick look at the previous tech's notes and said "Bad modem, Here's the RMA number and I'm sending you a replacement unit"

I have an Apple desktop computer. Not a bad computer, but after a couple of months, I got a better keyboard for it, since the keys on the original one was too thin, and I just disliked it. The funny thing is the same crappy Apple keyboard was about three times more expensive than what I desired.

What I really disliked was the mouse that came with the computer. Has a pea sized wheel, and I just disliked the right/left buttons. Looks like the one below. It crapped out on me after three years and I went down and bought an off brand mouse. This is what I am talking about.

I think it is a case of trying to make their product "look pretty" for the sake of utility. Tech is not a houseplant. Frankly, I think TV's hung on walls like pictures are ugly.

I also have an Apple phone. Has a great camera in it. Fantastic camera actually. It also has a lot of games that I enjoy playing. My work is about an hour away from the house by bus and this has been great to pass the time with.

However, this phone was a gift without instructions. I do not use the Apple as a phone because I have lost money not knowing that the internet feature is on, with me being unable to turn it off. It's also rather complicated, with pain in the ass features. My main phone is my little, thin, 5 year old Nokia, which is much simpler to use. Actually the Apple phone doesn't leave the house except when I am working. I dont take it to the bars for fear of losing it. If I am going outside for an errend, the Nokia goes.

I will like to say that I am an American in China, so it is not so easy to do what I want to do here to add more applications (for the record, I hate the non-word APPS) and whatnot, but in the end, the Apple phone is a child's toy, and if I did lose it, I would not miss it that much. I dont risk losing it because it is expensive and my wife gave it to me.

These days, if you have Internet access, there's no such thing as not having instructions. Though I will allow that there is such a thing as not caring enough to actually find them.

Seriously, if I can find a manual online for my crappy little $12 rice cooker, then you can find instructions for how to use an iPhone.

The iPhone is a tool. As is the Nokia. How well you utilize them is up to you and the applications (not to be confused with apps) for which you have need of such.

Funny thing; although it took a couple days to get used to it, I like that keyboard better than a normal-shaped one now. (I don't *have* one, and my laptop is just old enough to have the previous design.) The Mighty Mouse wheel is tiny... but then, it can go in any direction, rather than just up and down. (I do have one of those, but prefer my trackpad. Even though the button doesn't work anymore.)

Of course, if what isn't working is your internet connection...

I've wanted an iPhone for a long time but not bad enough to change providers from my current one to the Death Star. Now that my current provider has been blessed with the iPhone, I will probably get one when I am looking to upgrade my current phone. I did buy an iPad because it gives me some functionality while it fits in my camera bag. I do like it but I'm not about to lord it over people that I have an iPad. Same goes with my iPod.

And as for platforms...The Burroughs B-7800 trumps them all....

I've never used Nokia, but my last LG lasted for 3 years, and even then the only reason I had to replace it is because I dropped it and damaged the battery and it was cheaper to replace the phone than just the battery. It never froze, never crashed, had good battery life.
My Motorola freezes on a daily basis, has a shitty battery life (like I have to top it off mid day if I don't want it to completely die by the end of the day) and a keyboard that is nowhere near as ergonomic as on my old LG.
So, maybe it's not so much that I like LG as I hate Motorola

Well, at least with my friend whose made that claim I've before been with him when he's used his computer and had it freeze and crash... so I can say for 100% certain that at least his claims are bogus.

I've had all sorts of problems with my various Macs. (The chimes they used to play for a hardware failure were downright eerie, especially if you've never heard them before and aren't expecting anything.)

And I do admit being unhappy with both my current Nokia's battery life and that of its immediate predecessor. Before that, I only had to charge about once a week unless I used it a lot. Of course, many people have a lot worse life than my current two to three days (again, shorter if I use it. But that almost never happens.)

I've only had one one in with someone who seemed to think "apple" was tantamount to "handcrafted by haphaestus himself", and it was rather amusing.

My personal brand for mp3 players is Sansa. My previous one flaked after two years of faithful service, so I went to buy a new one as a bday gift (which was redundant, as my gma had bought me one too. XD Now I keep music on one, and audiobooks and comedy on the other. ) I bought it, loaded it up with my tunes, and went to starbucks to read and drink some tasty tasty chai.

Girl behind me sees my little black clip on sansa, snorts, and proceeds to ask why I didnt just buy an ipod or an iphone to use, showing off her app covered touch screen. I very calmly explained how

My little sansa was what I wanted. I liked the user interface it had, it made sense. I liked the simplicity. I explained that I bought an mp3 music player to, to be blunt, Play Fucking Music. And that was all. I did not seek an app inundated touch screen tiny tablet with nine thousand functions--I wanted something that played music. I got something that played music. And for about a sixth of what she'd paid. ^_^

She got all huffy for some reason. =P

I honestly don't care much about who has what, but if someones gonna act like an entitled snot to me when Im not on the clock, I will gleefully take them down a peg if I can.

She was very rude to you when she asked why you didn't buy what she had, so I do not feel that you were unjustified in explaining your reasoning to her.

However, most people don't buy iPod Touches or iPhones just to play music. Yes, you paid a sixth of what an iTouch would cost, but your device does a sixth of what an iTouch does. Which is fine if that's all you're after. You just can't assume that's all anyone is looking for.

Personally, I don't want an mp3 player to just play music, because that means I'll still have to carry my personal organizer, my phone, and sometimes my camera. I like my iPhone because I have everything in one device. It's one thing to grab on the way out the door, one thing to carry, and one thing to pull out of my pocket when I need to add something to my calendar, make a phonecall, switch the song I'm listening to, take a picture, do some online banking, or any other number of things.

I'm not married to Apple by any means. I'd say the same about any smartphone that does all the same stuff, and there are certainly others out there.

Long story short, asking someone with a basic mp3 player why they didn't buy an iPhone is like asking someone with a goldfish why they didn't buy a dog instead. It's apples and oranges. They either don't want all the bells and whistles, or they can't afford them. The girl who approached you is pretty out of touch for not realizing that.

I don't. I get that most people who buy a smartphone get them specifically because of the bells and whistles. I simply hate it when someone acts snotty to me because I didn't buy something I just....really don't want. I don't have a personal need for a smartphone, and severely dislike getting attitude for not having one. It irks me.

All excellent, excellent reasons to own such a device. Hell, that's almost swayed me a time or two, but I like having redundancies--I like knowing if my mp3 player craps out, I have my mid range little flip phone to listen to stuff with. I don't like the risk of, if one thing craps out, I lose however many services. And hell, I'll probably re-weigh the risks in a year or twos time and cave so I can have another shiny.

Thank you thank you for understanding! Thats just about the perfect metaphor.

And I do apologize if my previous post came off in any way as rude or biased against smartphone or iphone users--I just severely dislike the ones who look down on me for having somewhat simpler tastes.
