  • Lawn spam

Not sure what the correct name is for this, but I'm talking about these companies that have someone toss papers with ads for their services into people's yards, usually from a moving car. Found one of these in my yard just the other day. Sometimes they put it in a small plastic bag with a stone in it to keep it from blowing away, which is really fun if you hit it with your lawnmower.

How the hell is this even legal? If someone throws a McDonald's wrapper, and a cop sees them, they can charge them with littering, and rightfully so. So how is this type of thing not littering. It would seem to me that the cops wouldn't even have to see it happen, since it has the culprit's name, address, and/or phone number on it.

Just as I refuse to do business with any spammer or telemarketer, I refuse to do business with litterbugs.

What I'd really like to do is get everyone in the neighborhood to gather these things up and drop them off where they came from. Hey, if it's not supposed to bother us, it shouldn't bother them either, right?

I have never seen nor heard of such a thing and can't imagine its legal in any way shape or form.

The items are unsolicited advertising and the colloquial term is "lawn litter" due to the fact that most such ends up on lawns.

I know you aren't there, but the city of Pittsburgh prohibits the depositing of such materials on people's lawns. pdf of statute Interestingly enough, this also applies to notices affixed to vehicles.

Most places, however, do not have such statutes.

Happily, people here hang stuff by our doorknob, and we've gotten some good coupons for restaurants that way. I would not thrilled, however, if they tossed it in the yard or put it on the car.

I'm outside of Pittsburgh, but my borough has a similar ordinance. Dropping off flyers or other materials in yards...would actually fall under littering. Littering carries a hefty $300 fine where I live.

There are some local ordinances in place to stop this sort of thing. Sadly my town doesnt have one but the 'retail' town just west of us does. Which is good because we all got sick of people putting crap on our windshield when we were shopping.

At one point I decided if I got another notice for this one pumpkin patch I would be able to take it as an invitation to go mudding in their fields. I am a firm believer of DON'T FUCK MY VEHICLES. I have seen some of these assholes at work, they don't gently lift the wiper a bit and slide the paper under it they pull back way to far and let the wiper slam back down. I think screwing with someones vehicle is a shitty way to convince them to be your customer. I would be really pissed to have someone tossing rocks into my yard that is already a pain to clean when assholes litter.

It would be trespassing at least.

Yep, plus if you got caught...you could get busted for any damage done to the property. How do I know this? A group of local idiots got nailed last year...for taking their ATVs and pickups into a golf course for a night of "four wheeling." Several thousand dollars of trashed greens, fairways, and other damage...including fines, landed them in trouble. Last I heard, they were all on probation, and had to pay for all the damage. With that said, is a paper flyer under your wiper blade really worth it?

While it's not littering, I hate the crap people leave on door knobs.

Around here, usually once a month, someone from the nearby payday loans and advances places (there are multiple ones) comes by, walks past every door and puts an ad for their company on our doorknobs.

Yeah, cuz everyone here is poor, dumb, and desperate to get a loan that will only screw them over worse.

I think I need my eyes checked. Every time I see the title to this thread, I always think "Lawn Spawn". Not sure why, but I think my eyes need more sleep.

We don't get much, if anything in our lawn. Unless it's windy out and stuff falls out of peoples' cars/receipts out of their hands, etc.

Like Blas, I get stuff attached to my door. But it seems like it's every other day of the week! Pizza places & Chinese are usually the ones that are the culprits. But we get a lot of gutter cleaners and all around handymen.

Back at the apartment, Charter Cable was the worst. Well, and the local club scene that would leave cards on everybody's cars every week.
