I don't mind sports too much, except when they completely dominate everything on television. As one of the many americans who doesn't give two shits about baseball, why must they ruin my expected TV shows because of their stupid games!?

Or when a basketball games goes over their allotted time. The game was scheduled until 11, guess what, it's going until 11:36 now! Means I lost my 11p.m. show and 6 minutes of my next show! All because of a stupid game. Why not cut the damn game off at its allotted time?

Or better yet, keep the sports on the goddamn sports channels! Is there really anyone who watches 2, 5 and 7 anymore? Just about the whole world has 900 sports channels so put the game on that channel and let me watch Fringe!!!!

Plains crashing into towers = worthy of a tv interruption.

President assassinated = worthy of TV interruption

Bunch of guys screwing around in a field = NOT WORTHY OF RUINING MY TV!

How would y'all sports fans feel if they just started randomly interrupting your ESPN2 Lame Sports Championship with episodes of Star Trek?

I would happily volunteer to throw Kansas at anything.

Because those are the only channels I get out here and if my sports get cuts off because of someone's tv show or just isn't on because it's not one of the 10 channels we get, I'd go postal.

Besides, the major networks can make a lot more money off of running football all day on Sunday as opposed to reruns. I admit, the World Series does get tiresome, mostly because it goes on for so long. (Well, that and the fact that baseball on television is only somewhat more interesting to watch than paint drying.)

In the spring, networks could either shun the NCAA basketball tournament in favor of regular programming....or they could show the games that everyone wants to watch and make buckets of money.

ETA: Besides, there's an infinite variety of ways to get TV shows: Netflix, Hulu, HuluPlus, YouTube, etc. There's pretty much only one way to watch a game. I recently discovered this when we were trying to decide whether or not to keep cable. The main reason we kept it was that there was literally no other good way for Fiance to get his football fix, short of going out to bars, which kinda defeats the purpose.

Of course, your TV is far more important than anybody else's.

I'm willing to bet that there were a whole hell of a lot more people watching the World Series than would watch a typical episode of Fringe, and the money is with the eyeballs.

Yup. There were. Fringe has just over 3 million viewers, while the game had over 25 million viewers.

If you really want to lay blame, then lay it at the sponsor's door, because ultimately, they are the ones that decide what gets aired and when.

Nobody knows exactly how long a sporting event will last in advance. If it were possible, they might well cut off the *beginning* or some of the duller moments from the middle to make games come out the right length. But think about the shows you do like. How would you react if half the time the station cut them off ten minutes before the end to show something else?

The other thing is, sports are almost always aired live. That ties in to not knowing when they will end, but also, they are almost never rerun. Whereas the shows they preempt for them are generally either aired at a different time or will be rerun eventually anyway.

What annoys me is when the game is well over and they continue to talk about it further delaying what ever program is supposed to be on. THE GAME IS OVER, no one needs the after game commentary, especially since the show was supposed to be on 15 minutes ago.

                  This.

I love to watch NFL and NHL games, but I don't need the damned recap afterward. Stop dumbing it down and get the scheduled programming back as close as possible to its regular time!

The recap is useful in case the game runs *short*. Just schedule for a bit longer than you expect it to last, and have people ready to talk for however much of the scheduled time is left. But if you've already gone over, yes, please shut up.

I do have to admit that it's ok to watch a game when you can skip through the bullcrap. My dad will usually dvr a game and so all we're watching is the playing. no timeouts, no commercials, no commentary, nothing but play play play.

It just sucks sometimes. Getting all my tv ruined cuz of a damn baseball game.

Unfortunately this is true. I say "unfortunately" because I'm not one who likes to watch sports either. We have all these sports channels, and they still have to screw with my shows. I remember one year they didn't show the Simpsons Halloween special until January!

What would make sense would be for them to have scheduled re-shows of the popular stuff that gets bumped when the sportscasts go over, but that would just make too much sense.

My problem with some sports is that they play like 7 games to decide who wins. I say, bring your A-game and win or go home.

I always assumed they did. I remember when an episode of Human Target got preempted because of one of Obama's speeches (one of the few things that pisses me off about Obama), it was moved to another day. You'd think they would at least air it in place of reruns. It may be at 3:00am, but that's what recording is for.
