  • Internet Meme's

Now I do not mind them as a whole. LoL cats evolved into a fun site that I admit I'm addicted to (icanhascheezburger.com), I've used "Dramatic Gopher" in my blog when I want to be a bit silly.

But some of them get on my goddamn nerves. The latest from Skyrim and that FUCKING "Arrow to the knee".

Now I can't turn around twice without seeing a reference to it. Videos where people CGI in an "arrow to the knee" are everywhere and I can't enjoy a quiet evening of playing World of Warcraft without reading it a metric fuck-ton of times in trade chat.

It really makes me wish I could go back in time and push their pregnant grandmothers down a flight of steps so the people who turned it into a meme are never born.
“There are worlds out there where the sky is burning, where the sea's asleep and the rivers dream, people made of smoke and cities made of song. Somewhere there's danger, somewhere there's injustice and somewhere else the tea is getting cold. Come on, Ace, we've got work to do.” - Sylvester McCoy as the Seventh Doctor.

I'd managed not to hear of "arrow to the knee" up until now. Thanks?

I don't understand how Arrow To The Knee(tm) caught so much traction either. Especially when FUS RO DAH has so many more comedic possiblities. You don't even hear Arrow To The Knee(tm) that often in the game. Guards comment on your class much more often than the Knee comment.

Some memes get big and get small pretty quick. I doubt "Arrow To The Knee" will be around for too long. I mean, by this point, almost every time I've seen it quoted has been making fun of everyone else quoting it.

I do get tired of some memes quicker than others. Memes in general are fine, but some catch on which just seem... Stupid.

Also, I don't like rickrolls. But that's because I don't like being pranked.

I would say trollface actually has some use (indicating that something was a joke).

You are aware that trollface is usually used by people who are pranking, right?

Yes, I am. I don't like it, and I don't like being pranked. But it can be used to simply express sarcasm/mischeviousness. It has its uses. I don't use it. But it annoys me less because I think it does have its uses.

                  I'm a helper. (Honestly, not a Rickroll.)

What you think is a meme is actually Tex Mex.

Memes get into trouble, I think (that is, get annoying) when they cease to be the punchline, and become the joke in and of themselves. At that point, they can no longer be incorporated into other, actually relevant jokes.

At my high school prom, there was a big platter labeled "Cake". There was never any cake on it, catering didn't make it until halfway through the event. Also in highschool, in the Cafeteria there were small cakes. They were labeled "Pie." In both of these situations, 'The cake is a lie' would be a good joke (in that literally there is a lie told about the substance of a cake). But people get so tired of hearing "The cake is a lie" they no longer find it amusing.

That's where the gags get into trouble. And that's where I think "I took an arrow to the knee" is at the moment.

I'm sometimes guilty of using things in that manner as well, though often I don't actually use larger memes like that. I'll use an in-joke with my friends, and we'll all laugh. Again, some of the in-jokes have become genericized to the point that they're no longer really jokes. For instance, sometimes when I get excited while playing Madden, I will jumble up words, sound drunk, and make no sense. One of these word-jumbles ended with the phrase "Intercleption tafong" (I meant interception touchdown). Now Natty and I just use "Tafong" to mean "Touchdown". Though occasionally it specifically means "Touchdown scored by the defense." Nevertheless, the point is that it's become so generic that it's just a part of the vocabulary.

OK, I admit it...I happen to love Rickrolls. Not that I pull them on people anymore, it's gotten a bit old. I guess I just like the song!!

The meme I truely despise is "cool story bro". It's the ultimate form of shitposting and isn't even funny.

Better explain why I don't have a problem with trollface.

I generally only see it in a ragecomic (denoting 'this character is being mischevious during this anecdote') or when my friend who plays Pinkie makes a post with it as the reaction face (he uses a picture of Pinkie in all of his posts, and it changes in the post). Again, that implies "Pinkie is being mischevious and leading you on."

He usually does it halfway through the "Secret Ingredient" routine, when he thinks people are not getting it.

(The joke being referring to a 'secret ingredient' in his cupcakes which he won't tell. People guess it's 'other ponies' because of the fanfic. In fact, the secret ingredient is "All you need" and he "would do anything for it, but he won't do that."

When he's exhausted all his love puns, he uses the trollface to give people a clue that he's been mischevious)
