  • Tebowing

Look, it's no secret I love me some Tim Tebow. He is a pretty cool guy, if you ask me.

That said, I do not like the phenomenon of Tebowing. Why?

No idea, really, it bothers me.

See, I hate Tim Tebow but I really like Tebowing. Probably has something to do with the fact that it's mocking Tim Tebow.

I'm just pissed about those kids who were suspended when they Tebowed in the hall. Newsflash, you're really just a bunch of dicks clogging up a hallway and the school isn't putting up with your crap. You aren't special. Then they arranged another mass Tebowing outside the school right after the school day they were suspended like they were sticking it to the man. Sorry, no one gives a crap, certainly not the school, and you STILL aren't special.

They do, but they call it 'Genuflecting'.

It's great to give tribute to the guy you like him, or mock him (because I'm sure he can take it). It's also really not a bad way to kneel if you want to concentrate. But it all seems so... Well, silly. Pointless.

I know I'm really out of the loop when it comes to ...well, everything, but...

Tim Tebow, the QB for the Denver Broncos, who has managed to have a good season despite the fact that he can't throw the ball worth a damn. He has a tendency to 'take a knee' and make a very public spectacle of praying every time he scores a touchdown. (He also writes Bible verses in his eye black.) People mock this by "Tebow'ing" in equally puzzling circumstances/situations. It briefly became the new 'planking' before reddit got bored of it and moved on to the next thing.

And on the sideline. And any time someone else scores a touchdown.

He does it a lot, is the point. Though I don't think he makes a spectacle of that in particular. The eyeblack, yes. The praying, though, it's really the cameras choosing to focus on him.

Sure, but a streaker could say the same thing.

What denomination of Christianity is he? Most churches don't require their followers to take a knee to pray. Some even say you should do it standing, with your arms raised. The church I attended as a child only asked that we bow our heads.

According to Wikipedia, his parents were Baptist missionaries, but it doesn't say which flavor of Baptist. Since he was homeschooled, I'm guessing he's on the hard-line/conservative end of the spectrum.

I really don't agree with this statement. He is giving them something to focus on.

Given the religious make-up of the States, I'm willing to bet that there are a fair few NFLers who are religious and pray on the field on a regular basis, yet I can't really name one besides Tebow because he's the only one who draws attention to himself while he's doing it.

Does this activity mean if he prays harder than the other team he'll win? Does it mean that his god hates the other side?

One of my coworkers and I have started "Tebowing" every time something isn't going right at work, as a mockery of him.

We've also just started throwing the word "Tebow" around every so many words to mock ESPN for their undying love and obsession of him.

By the way, the team name is the Denver Tebows now.

This is all a little unfamilar to me as I am not an avid sports fan and do not follow them as closely as some of the rest of you do. However, I have to wonder exactly what Tebow is praying for when he kneels after a touchdown is scored or when he prays during a game. Is he praying that they'll win? If so, that seems both strange and silly at the same time. On one hand, you're asking God to favor your team over the other team, which seems pretty selfish. On the other hand, it seems like a pretty silly thing to ask from God. I mean, praying for relief from disease or natural disaster makes sense from a certain point of view, but not praying that you'll win a game.

However, maybe he's praying that no one gets hurt during the game, or maybe he's thanking God for the fact that no one has gotten hurt during the game. I can understand that.

Overall, though, I've learned to be a little leery of people who make a visible spectacle out of their religious beliefs. This includes atheists who harp about how they don't believe in a god. In all cases, they seem to have this attitude like, "Hey, we're this little elite group, and we have all the answers!"

Ah, okay. So, in other words, no one of consequence.

Well, don't underestimate the ability of a sports figure to influence other things.

Not really saying Tebow will. Really, he's a great guy, love him to death, but I wouldn't say he'll be incredibly important. But don't dismiss sports figures as 'no-one of consequence'. The biggest prize in Massachusetts Republican primaries is (and has been for a while) Curt Schilling. On a larger scale, look at Muhammed Ali or, before him, Jackie Robinson. They did a hell of a lot, despite being only sports players.

While I would agree Tebow is really no-one of consequence, I really hate the attitude that sports are unimportant, idle distractions we'd all be better off without.
